Political education plays a crucial role in preparing citizens to engage responsibly in the national struggle to achieve the socio-economic goals of a country. In India, the primary objectives are eradicating poverty and establishing a modern democratic, secular, and socialist society instead of the existing traditional, feudal, hierarchical, and unequal one.
Initially, during British rule, Congress leaders emphasized the importance of political education, rejecting the official notion that education and politics should remain separate. However, after coming into power in 1947, they adopted a stance that education should be kept free from political influences. They advocated for “hands off education” and discouraged political parties from interfering in the educational system. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, political interference in education has significantly increased over the years, with different political parties vying for the attention of teachers and students.

Instead of genuine political support, the system has been plagued by excessive political interference driven by ulterior motives. This interference negatively impacts the true essence of political education, which should foster a commitment to social transformation. Unfortunately, political education within the school system has become weaker compared to the pre-independence era, largely due to this interference.
Simultaneously, the end of the freedom struggle marked the disappearance of the major non-formal agencies that provided political education. While the press had the potential to fill this gap, vested interests continued to dominate it, limiting its effectiveness. Similarly, other institutions and agencies that could contribute to political education have also fallen short.
Regrettably, despite the passage of time, genuine political education has seen little progress since independence. In fact, some aspects have regressed. The education system has become even more focused on elite interests, resulting in the erosion of patriotism. Mahatma Gandhi, who emphasized the importance of disciplined opposition to a wrong government based on principles, has been forgotten. Today, instead of disciplined action on critical issues, there is a prevalence of agitation and anarchic politics focused on individual or party gain.

Without significant efforts to provide genuine political education on a large scale, the situation will not improve. This reform is crucial to challenge the status quo and drive radical social transformation. Merely expanding the formal education system without addressing this issue will exacerbate the existing inequalities.
