Who Are The Luminaries

“And they will be as luminaries in the expanse the heavens, to cause light on the Earth. And it was so.” – Gen 1:15

‘Luminaries’ is properly written this time.

Whereas previously their purpose was twofold:

  • 1) to separate day and night
  • 2) as signs

here we have a third purpose added:

  • 3) to cause light on the Earth

“And it was so” – indicates that the making, placing and purpose of the luminaries is done and dusted. [As previously in v.7 when God made the firmament and divided the waters, “and it was so.” In v. 9 God said ‘let dry land appear’, “and it was so.” And in v. 11 God instructed the earth to bring forth vegetation, “and it was so.”]

“And God made two great luminaries – the great luminary as ruler of the day, and the small luminary as ruler of the night – and the stars.” – Gen 1:16

Why does it say that “God made two great luminaries/curses”? [For once again the word ‘luminaries’ is written as previously in v. 14 with the missing letter.] God brought luminaries into existence in v.14, confirmed that they were done in v.15, and then made two more in v.16?

The great luminary as ruler of the day is surely the sun, and the small luminary as ruler of the night is surely the moon? But neither the sun nor moon are mentioned until much later: the sun for the first time in Gen 15:1, and the moon for the first time in Gen 37:9.

God “made great lights: the sun as ruler in the day. The moon and stars as rulers in the night.” – Ps 136:7-9

Azriel speaks: Yes, Joseph: lights, not luminaries. And they are rulers in the day and night, not rulers of/over the day and night. You have taken for granted that the luminaries mentioned are the sun and the moon. But the text neither mentions nor numbers them, and the stars are clearly mentioned. “For God made luminary and sun” (Ps 74:16). You’ve also taken for granted that their purpose ‘to cause light on the earth’ refers to physical light.

So what are the luminaries? They

  • are in the heavens
  • separate day and night
  • indicate seasons, days and years,
  • are a source of spiritual light on the Earth.

The signs of the zodiac? They have always been called ‘signs’ and are distinct from the constellations associated with them. For each sign of the zodiac consists of 30 degrees of the sky (30 x 12 = 360 degrees). The sun regresses through them, losing approximately 1 degree every 72 years. It takes the sun about 2160 years to pass through one sign of the zodiac, and about 25,920 years to pass through them all. Starting in Leo the sun passed back through Cancer, Gemini, Taurus, Aries, and finally to Pisces, which began with the birth of Jesus in AD 1. The next will be Aquarius, introducing a new age for humanity in the year 2150.

But the zodiac are twelve and two luminaries are clearly mentioned. But if they are not the sun and moon, then what are they? And why does it say God made two great luminaries, but that only one is great and the other is small?
