The start of the month means new additions arrive on Netflix! One of those in August 2023 is the action-adventure film River Wild. The movie features many beautiful natural views, as well as dangerous waters. So where was it filmed?
Real-life couple Adam Brody and Leighton Meester star opposite each other as Joey Reese and Trevor, respectively. Playing Meester’s onscreen brother is actor Taran Killam who takes on the role of Gray Reese. Olivia Swann as Karissa, Eve Connolly as Van, Matt Devere as Walt, Nick Wittman as Max, and Kiel Kennedy as James round out the cast.

The film is a reimagined version of the Meryl Streep-led 1994 movie of the same name. It follows siblings Joey and Gray, who decide to go on a whitewater rafting trip, per the synopsis. Joey is excited until she learns that her brother invited a “childhood friend with a troubled past,” Trevor. When the three face raging rapids, it becomes clear someone is sabotaging the adventure so certain secrets don’t come to light.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Leighton revealed that the movie was filmed in Hungary, Slovakia, and Bosnia. While the film takes place in Idaho in the U.S., the production team actually had their cameras rolling in Eastern Europe. And in Slovakia, the cast had to train at the Olympic whitewater facility there to prepare for the movie, according to Screen Rant.

“We filmed in Hungary, Slovakia and Bosnia, and drove to and from each location through Eastern Europe. We were outside in the elements — the heat of summer, on the ground or in the cold water, the racing rapids, or on the raft.”
Just like their characters, the actors were dealing with challenging elements. But they make it look so easy! Unfortunately, the exact filming locations in each country aren’t known. However, it’s believed that they did use the Danube River in Hungary, per Screen Rant.
