Who Has Tim Tebow Dated

SALT LAKE CITY — Tim Tebow, a notable BYU critic, announced on Instagram Thursday that he is engaged to former Miss Universe Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters.

What happened: The Heisman Trophy winner posted pictures of himself on one knee and offering an engagement ring to Nel-Peters, a 23-year-old South Africa native, according to The Associated Press.

  • “Thank you for saying YES and making me the happiest man in the world. You’re the love of my life, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with you,” he wrote in the caption.
  • Tebow, 31, previously played college football for the University of Florida, winning national championships in the 2006 and 2008 seasons. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos and then played for the New York Jets.

Controversy: Tebow’s dating life has been anything but smooth sailing. As I wrote back in 2015, Tebow’s chaste lifestyle fell under scrutiny after his former girlfriend, Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, ended their relationship because of “his virginity vow,” US Weekly reported at the time.

  • “He was sending her love letters and cute notes and professing his love for her,” an insider told New York Daily News. “She had to break up with him because she just couldn’t handle it. He still hits her up, but she just can’t deal with the sex thing. He’s pretty adamant about it.”
  • At the time, sports media outlets mocked Tebow over the breakup. Such headlines included: “Tim Tebow still can’t find the end zone as girlfriend Olivia Culpo breaks it off over lack of sex” from the New York Daily News. CBS wrote, “Apparently an NFL job isn’t the only thing Tim Tebow can’t hold onto.”

Flashback: Tebow said he wanted to date “someone who loves Jesus and loves people,” according to my report.

“You know what I think would be awesome? If I could adopt a kid from every continent,” he told People magazine. “I think that would be a pretty cool goal. I want to sit around the dinner table every night and see kids from Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, right here in the States. How cool would that be? It’s one of my favorite things to dream about.”

More headlines: Tebow made headlines last week for criticizing BYU football (sort of). He explained why he didn’t accept the New Orleans Saints’ offer to play multiple positions for them, like former BYU quarterback Taysom Hill, and said Hill could have been a bigger star if he played for … well, let Tebow explain:

  • “He (Saints head coach Sean Payton) did a good job making it clear what he thought,” Tebow said. “It just wasn’t necessarily in my heart at the time. It was cool. It wasn’t like I was totally against it. Love coach Payton. He’s one of the best coaches out there. For me, I still wanted to pursue being a quarterback and then baseball. Sometimes it’s not that you dislike something. It’s that you have something even more in your heart.”
  • “If he (Hill) was on a better team — I’m not trying to knock his college team — if he was on a better team, I think he would have had a chance to be special,” Tebow said. “You put him on the field with good teams and see what he could do, I think he could have done really well. I liked watching him a lot.”
