What To Do With Cats During Pest Control

The Noosa Pest Management technicians see many pets when they visit our customers’ homes. We used to worry much more about pets being exposed to applications, baits and traps. But now that we use natural pest control measures as often as possible, there’s less concern about negatively affecting homeowners’ greatly loved pets.

What To Do With a Pet During Pest Control Services

Noosa encourages all our pet parent clients to plan in advance for an emergency pest control situation. If you plan to keep your dog or cat at home during the pest control appointment, please let your technician know there is an animal in the house. They may have specific instructions during their visit.

Fortunately, there are several alternatives to leaving your pets at home while making applications, dusting, or baiting traps are occurring. Some possibilities include the following:

  • Leave a dog or cat in the care of a willing friend or neighbor, or board the pet at a kennel for the day.
  • If you have a getaway planned and can take your pets with you, try to align it with your next pest control service appointment.
  • Finally, you could keep your pets confined in a safe part of the home as far from pest control activities as possible.

Additionally, before the pest control technicians arrive at your home, we recommend you collect all pet toys, food, and water bowls, bedding, and anything else they routinely contact, lick, or ingest. Securing them in a closed cabinet, sealed container, or another inaccessible place is a good idea to avoid possible exposure to chemicals.

Recognize That Different Pets Have Different Needs

Exotic pets, from clownfish to parakeets to potbellied pigs, have unique living arrangements that keep them in tanks, coops, cages, or other enclosures. Fish, birds, and reptiles may require advanced preparation before indoor spray treatments for fleas or other bugs. Be sure to cover their tanks and cages with blankets or towels to prevent any overspray, air-borne mist, or droplets from entering.

Before exposing sensitive-skinned birds and reptiles to pest control products, consider calling your veterinarian for advice. Some reptiles have relatively porous skin, and birds have delicate respiratory systems. In both cases, they may be more susceptible to pesticides containing chemicals, essential oils, and other possible irritants.

When in doubt, ask your Noosa pest professional if you should remove your pet(s) from the premises based on their particular needs and the pest treatment and application methods used in your home.

After You Pest Control Treatment Visit

Once the pest control appointment is complete, we recommend delaying letting your pets from roaming your home right away. Ensure that all sprayed areas have been properly ventilated and thoroughly dried before letting any four-legged family member near them. And never, never set baits and traps where pets can access them.

If your pet does come into contact with a poisonous substance, reach out to your veterinarian immediately. If it’s after hours, metro areas like Charlotte, North Carolina, have several emergency vets, most on-call 24/7. Additionally, you can contact one of the following organizations:

  • The National Pesticide Information Centere
  • The ASPCA Animal Poision Control
  • Pet Poision Helpline

Noosa’s Position on Pests, Pets, and the Ecosystem

We’re proud of our commitment to the EPA’s Pesticide Environmental Stewardship Program. Low-impact pest control doesn’t mean no impact. We utilize the latest advancement in natural pest control technology along with exclusion methods and other Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices to effectively control pests while minimizing environmental impact — including exposing pets to potentially dangerous chemicals.

Pests? Call Noosa. Pets? We Love Seeing Them, Too.

There’s nothing like being greeted at the door by a friendly dog or even a pet lizard, we’re thrilled to meet any friendly cats, dogs, and even geckos. Many of us are pet parents ourselves, we’re extremely cautious about the dangers of having pets wandering around while we make applications, apply bait and install traps, or perform other pest control tasks.
