Baseball Glove Basics

  • Baseball gloves are made up exclusively of leather, usually from cow hide.
  • Leather is tough, but it needs the proper amount of tender love and care to last several decades.
  • Leather needs to be oiled to enhance game performance and longevity.

Why Should I Oil the Baseball Glove So Often?

Why is this so important? A website called thebaseballguide.com explains it best by stating, “The oil is the food that your glove needs”.

The leather must be maintained on a consistent basis. If not, your glove may wear out after only a season or two. Baseball gloves are extremely expensive to buy. Some top of the line brands like Rawlings, Mizuno, or Wilson sells gloves for upwards of nearly $500.00 each. Taking good care of your glove will save you money in the long run.

Advantages of Oiling Your Baseball Glove Often

One major advantage of oiling your baseball glove at the recommended frequency is that it will break-in at a faster rate. When a glove is brand new the leather is stiff. This make for greater difficulty in catching fly balls and ground balls since the glove is harder to close for the player.

Oiling the glove makes the leather softer and easier to close. Playing the game with a well broken-in baseball glove will improve your performance on the field. As we all know greater performance means experiencing a greater amount of enjoyment of the game.

What Type of Oil Should You Use?

Each different baseball glove manufacturer usually recommends its own brand of glove oil. While there is nothing wrong with adhering to this advice, a more cost-effective solution is suggested by former Major League Baseball player Doug Bernier. According to his website:

“I use Lexol spray, saddle soap or mink oil when conditioning my glove. Lexol is my favorite. Mink oil takes a while to sink in and you’ll probably need to remove some excess the following day before your game. Saddle soap (see Amazon) is great too. It’s very light, so you might need to do it more often. But the upside of using saddle soap on your baseball glove is there’s no left-over residue”.

Final Thoughts

Mike Barnicle has a great quote about the importance of the baseball glove. He said,

“It’s your glove, your baseball glove. It’s got a soul, a memory all its own, and a future that never fades because it has never let go of the grasp the past has on you and so many others”. – Mike Barnicle

A baseball glove is quite possibly the most important weapon in the baseball player’s arsenal. No matter how busy you get, just remember: TAKE CARE OF YOUR GLOVE OFF THE FIELD AND IT’LL TAKE CARE OF YOU ON THE FIELD!
