the biography

Krauthammer was born on March 13, 1950 in New York City to a Ukrainian father, Schulum, and a Belgian mother, Thea Krauthammer, both Orthodox Jews. When he was five, his family moved to Montreal. Charles and his older brother, Marcel, attended Hebrew school, but Marcel died in 2006.

After high school, Charles went to McGill University of Montreal graduating with a first-class degree in economics and political science in 1970. The same year he returned to the classroom, this time at Balliol College in Oxford, where he graduated in politics as a Commonwealth Scholar. After studying at Balliol College, he returned to the United States to study as a physician at Havard Medical School.

Tragedy struck in his first year of medical school when he was involved in a diving accident that severed his spine at 5°C and left him permanently paralyzed from the neck down. That didn’t stop his dreams of becoming a Doctor, after 14 months in the hospital, Krauthammer returned to medical school in a wheelchair. He graduated as a psychiatrist in 1975.

From 1975 to 1978 he was a resident psychiatrist at Massachusetts General Hospital, where during his research he discovered a variant of manic depression (also called bipolar disorder) which he identified as secondary mania. He published his findings in the Archives of General Psychiatry and also co-authored an exploratory study on the epidemiology of mania.

After serving at Massachusetts General Hospital, Charles moved to Washington, DC in 1978, where he joined a team of psychiatric researchers during the Carter administration. He also started writing articles on politics The new republic In 1981, as a columnist, he was promoted to writer and editor of the media organization.

He was appointed speechwriter to Vice President Walter Mondale. In 1983, he began writing essays for Time magazine, including one on the Reagan Doctrine, which first won him national recognition as a writer. His New Republic essays won him the National Magazine Award for Essays and Criticism.

After working two years in the New Republic as a writer/editor, he began writing for The Washington Post, his articles winning him the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 1987. In 1990 he became a member of the special group – a PBS political roundtable Inside Washington program hosted by Gordon Peterson, which aired from 1988 to 2013.

For more than a decade, Charles Krauthammer has worked with FOX News Channel (FNC) as a contributor, commentator and political analyst. In 2016, he was named the most influential commentator in America by Financial Times for having influenced American foreign policy for more than twenty years.

His other accolades include the Champion/Tuck Award for Economic Understanding, the Eric Breindel Award for Excellence in Opinion Journalism,an annual award from the Eric Breindel Foundation, the People for the American Way First Amendment Award, and the first annual Bradley Prize.

For his essay on the new republic titled Holy War Wars in America, Charles received the First Amendment Award from the People for the American Way in 1985, as well as the Guardian of Zion Award from Bar-Ilan University in 2002. most successful columnist of all time was worth $8 million. Krauthammer has been married to his barrister wife-in-law, Robyn Krauthammer (née Trethewey) since 1974. However, Robyn has long since left the legal profession to devote herself to her work as an artist. After giving up her legal profession, Robyn headed to the Corcoran School of Art and then to the Maryland Institute College of Art to gain artistic professionalism.

She is also co-founder of Pro Musica Hebraica, an organization that aims to bring the diversity and richness of Jewish classical music to the world.

Charles and Robyn are blessed with a son, Daniel Krauthammer.

His health and recent surgery

In October 2017, Krauthammer underwent planned surgery that was recommended by his team of doctors. But unfortunately, he had some complications after the operation.

In a statement released in February 2018, Fox’s press contributor said he was still recovering from complications resulting from the surgery, but the healing process is actually slower than expected.
