Where Can I Get Patches Sewn On

R&W Custom Leatherworks is currently based in Birch Run, Michigan, among the Premium Outlets (map). If you arrived here after seaching Google or Bing for “motorcycle patch sewing near me” – don’t leave yet! We do a lot of remote patch sewing via USPS, UPS and FedEx. You can contact us in advance, then ship your vests and patches to us, with a return label in the box. We will send an invoice when the patches are sewn on and ship by the next business day after receiving your payment.

The sewing part of our business is mostly handled by Wiz Feinberg. We are fully equipped with heavy duty industrial sewing machines. These machines include Singer and Adler “patchers” that sew in any direction (for sewing on patches and repairing purses and shoe uppers), plus flat bed, post bed and cylinder arm walking foot machines, up to a super heavy duty Cowboy CB4500 harness stitcher capable of sewing over 3/4 inch of leather with very thick thread (Dan loves to sew on the Cowboy!).

We Sew On Patches!

A large percentage of our sewing jobs involves sewing embroidered patches onto bikers’ vests and jackets. You can bring your own patches or check out our large selection, including right and left side US flags and all kinds of sayings. We are able to sew patches over pockets, onto sleeves and even ball caps using our Singer and Adler patchers and the post bed walking foot machine. Prices start at just $5.00 for small round, oval, square, or rectangular patches sewn through the lining with one color of thread. Odd shapes with a lot of turns or thread color changes cost more, as do large patches and patches over pockets (yes, we can sew over pockets without closing them!). Opening and closing linings to avoid sewing through them or their inside pockets costs $10 each. A vest back patch job with two curved rockers and a large center patch typically goes for between $50 and $75, depending on the size and shape of the center patch.

We can also sew patches onto the back of vests that have zipper closure cooler pad linings on the inside and avoid closing that lining. Sewing patches over these areas is much more difficult than simply sewing through the lining and costs more per patch. We will quote the price when we see the vest and the patches.

We are able to remove your old patches with little or no damage to the leather as long as they weren’t glued on and will try to cover the holes with any new patches you provide. Finally, we try to match the color of the thread to the borders of your patches (or use clear thread when there are multiple edge colors). As an optional service, We can sometimes use our serger to replace missing thread along the edges of machine embroidered patches. We only do single color edging on round, oval, square and rectangular patches.

NOTE: We get really busy sewing patches during riding season. So, you may have to leave your vest with us until we can get to it. If you are in a registered Motorcycle Club (MC) that forbids leaving your vest, we will try to sew your patches on while you wait, if at all possible. Please call us first to see when we will have a time slot available for you.

This picture shows some of the many biker patches we stock. Click or press on it to see a larger view. You can have us sew them onto your vest, or jacket, or take them home and iron them on yourself. If can’t come to our shop and you want to buy iron-on or Velcro-on patches, or have custom patches made, and install them yourself, check out TheCheapPlace.com for patches.

Sewing Capabilities

We have walking foot machines that can sew leather, Biothane, canvas, heavy cloth, webbing and woven vinyl (aka: Naugahyde). Our sewing capabilities range from denim garments through the heaviest of leather and webbing, using #69 through #346 bonded nylon or polyester thread (see this chart comparing thread sizes). The photo shows me sewing a large vinyl equipment cover. The maximum thickness we can sew is 7/8 of an inch on our Cowboy CB4500 leather stitcher.

Repairs

We also use our sewing machines to repair purses and bags, to reinforce/replace loose or missing thread, to install new zippers in garments, bags and boots, to hem pants, skirts and chaps, sew tow straps, and to replace/repair seat covers. Our sewing machines can handle anything from a cloth shirt to the thickest case or holster.

At R & W, our repairs also include rivet, eyelet and snap replacements, replacing old or missing buckles on belts, bags and shoes, adding grommets to the sides of vests so they can be laced to fit, stretching shoes and boots, and cleaning, patching and redyeing leathers.
