His ranch headquarters, which lay six miles northwest of present-day Floresville, became the foundation upon which this thriving town was built.

From Lodi to Floresville: Shaping a Town’s Identity

In 1833, the nucleus of the town emerged as the Flores home, a chapel, and a graveyard, forming a community known as Lodi. It served as the Wilson County seat from 1867 to 1871, and again from 1871 to 1873. However, the town took on a new identity and name when it was officially founded as Floresville in 1867, honoring the influential Flores family.

A Blossoming Town: Development and Progress

During the 1870s, Floresville experienced significant growth. Andrew G. Pickett, a prominent citizen and ranch owner, introduced an innovative irrigation system and began cultivating peanuts. By 1885, Floresville boasted two hotels, several stores, a weekly newspaper called the Chronicle, two steam cotton gin-gristmills, and a population of 400. The town’s development gathered momentum in 1883 when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway announced plans to construct a rail line through Floresville. In 1890, Floresville was officially incorporated with a reported population of 1,500.

Agriculture played a vital role in Floresville’s growth. The cotton and livestock industries bolstered the town’s prosperity, and around 1915, residents began cultivating peanuts as a cash crop. Over the years, Floresville earned the moniker “Peanut Capital of Texas,” solidifying its reputation as a significant agricultural hub.

Flourishing in Modern Times

From 1930 to 2000, Floresville experienced steady population growth, expanding from 1,581 residents in 1931 to 5,868 in 2000. The town’s business landscape blossomed as well, with 342 rated businesses operating by the turn of the century. With its convenient location, many residents now commute to work in nearby San Antonio, utilizing Floresville as their hometown retreat.

Celebrating Tradition: The Annual Peanut Festival

Floresville is renowned for its beloved Peanut Festival, which originated in 1938. This cherished event attracts 10,000 to 15,000 visitors each year, celebrating the town’s rich agricultural heritage.
