In his leisure time, he taught himself how to program and compose game music. In 1995, Ota produced Touhou Rei’iden—Highly Responsive to Prayers under the nickname ‘ZUN.’

While the yin yang ball mechanic was mercifully removed, the game’s bosses were undeniably powerful. The majority of the courses comprised Reimu flipping tiles and gaining points, but every five levels, he would come across a vaguely horrible creature. These ominous foes would rain the screen with more complicated patterns of projectiles, diverting the attention away from dealing with a crude physics engine and toward simple survival—a nice change of pace.
ZUN’s second game, The Story of Eastern Wonderland, marked a considerable departure. It was the first ‘real’ Touhou game, a bullet hell shooter with slower, more complicated projectile patterns. However, ZUN was still experimenting with the tone and setting of the Touhou series: after fighting hordes of cartoonish ghosts, you come across a modern-day tank adorned with a yin yang symbol in one tonally perplexing level.
At the time, computers were not well suited to rendering action-oriented games. The first five Touhou games were created on the NEC PC-9801 (‘PC- 98,’ a Japanese MS-DOS-based computer similar to the Apple II. Because of the poor framerate, resolution, and color spectrum, identifying enemy bullets from the background was half the challenge. The music was also difficult to appreciate due to the computer’s limited spectrum of noises.
