Jun’ya Ota was 19 when he decided to create a game. Unsatisfied with most games on the market, he set out to create something for himself that was simple, difficult, and a little quirky. In his leisure time, he taught himself how to program and compose game music. In 1995, Ota produced Touhou Rei’iden—Highly Responsive to Prayers under the nickname ‘ZUN.’

Shinto monk Reimu Hakurei knocks about a large yin yang ball as she travels dimensions in a game reminiscent of Breakout, looking for the demon that destroyed her shrine. It’s ridiculous, tough to regulate, and unrepresentative of the entire series. Also, you will find out which Touhou character are you in this quiz.

Which Touhou character are you?

While the yin yang ball mechanic was mercifully removed, the game’s bosses were undeniably powerful. The majority of the courses comprised Reimu flipping tiles and gaining points, but every five levels, he would come across a vaguely horrible creature. These ominous foes would rain the screen with more complicated patterns of projectiles, diverting the attention away from dealing with a crude physics engine and toward simple survival—a nice change of pace.

ZUN’s second game, The Story of Eastern Wonderland, marked a considerable departure. It was the first ‘real’ Touhou game, a bullet hell shooter with slower, more complicated projectile patterns. However, ZUN was still experimenting with the tone and setting of the Touhou series: after fighting hordes of cartoonish ghosts, you come across a modern-day tank adorned with a yin yang symbol in one tonally perplexing level.

At the time, computers were not well suited to rendering action-oriented games. The first five Touhou games were created on the NEC PC-9801 (‘PC- 98,’ a Japanese MS-DOS-based computer similar to the Apple II. Because of the poor framerate, resolution, and color spectrum, identifying enemy bullets from the background was half the challenge. The music was also difficult to appreciate due to the computer’s limited spectrum of noises.

About the quiz

As a result of the seal, Gensokyo became inaccessible to the outside world, and people who lived there were unable to escape. The presence of Gensokyo could not be proven from the outside world, nor could the existence of the outside world be confirmed within Gensokyo. As a result, the isolated group created its own culture apart from the rest of the globe. It is a bordering planet to its outside, rather than being in a parallel reality, although being separated by a barrier. Because Gensokyo is an interior mountain, there are no seas.

In present-day Gensokyo, as in all Touhou games, magical and spiritual aspects predominate, in contrast to the outside world, where unexplainable phenomena were regarded as “superstition” by the Meiji era. The Hakurei Shrine is the only known entrance from the outer world into Gensokyo. The spell card regulations were also devised in order to maintain the interaction between humans and youkai, which is important for the preservation of Gensokyo’s balance. The Great Hakurei Barrier, which is administered by Reimu, was built in 1885 and is defined as a “barrier of common reason,” making it a strong logical barrier that not even youkai can generally cross past. The youkai were initially opposed to its development, but gradually realized its utility.
