This song definitely seems to come from a person who is expressing an internal dialogue. Whether a real or imagined relationship, a sea of mixed emotions is experienced by this person whose heart is broken for some reason or another (not necessarily with another person). For anyone who has been devastated by heartbreak can definitely relate in their own unique way. Therefore, whatever Tegan & Sara originally intended is irrelevant, their gift of song writing articulates a more universal perspective and not pure narrative.
To me the song can have three general meanings: 1) Self defeat over a lost ambition or dream 2) The end of a relationship- real or desired (and subsequently rejected) 3) The dying of a great love, and the bereaved one’s grief expressed
