If you are law enforcement or military, your tactical gloves must-haves may be slightly different than if you are search and rescue or a first responder, where the intended use can differ.
There are also a lot of options when it comes to tactical glove brands, prices, and how the gloves fit, feel, and function on your hands. A closer look at the features and benefits of tactical gloves may also help you decide how to choose tactical gloves that best suit your needs.

Hand Protection
Fit and function aside, first and foremost your new tactical gloves are essential for protecting your hands. It is so important to find the correct pair of gloves for the job.
Whether you are target shooting, involved in combat duty, or braving the elements in a search and rescue effort, you need the correct hand safety gear that also offers comfort and dexterity.
Glove Fit & Adjustability
One size does not fit all when it comes to choosing the best tactical gloves for your needs. The better the fit, the more comfortable, dexterous, and tactile your gloves will be.
Since tactical gloves tend to stretch with time and use, choose a snug comfortable fit when breaking in new gloves. That said, you don’t want a pair that is too tight. They should feel natural and not restrict your movement.
Hooks and loop Velcro wrist straps are also a good idea. They help adjust the fit and make it easier and quicker to put on and take off the gloves.
Breathable Gloves
Breathable tactical gloves may also be high on your priority list. They are not designed to keep your hands warm and won’t make your hands hot and sweaty. In fact, they reduce sweating by absorbing moisture.

Breathable fabrics like nylon, mesh, polyester, and thermoplastic rubber tend to be thin, fit snugly, and offer maximum dexterity, making them ideal for use in hot weather. Some even have touch screen capability and include leather palms for durability.
Insulation
Insulated tactical gloves are a must if you will be subjecting your hands to cold weather extremes. The range of thermal protection and the glove dexterity will vary greatly depending on the fabric weight (light or heavy) and the type of fabric used (synthetic or natural).
Glove Fabric
It’s important to first understand how your tactical gloves will be used and under what conditions. This will help determine the type of tactical glove fabric you need.
Leather is tough and waterproof, but not as dexterous as some other glove fabrics. Some tactical gloves also feature rubber padding in the palm and knuckles for extra protection against abrasions and sharp objects.
Your choice of tactical glove fabrics include:
- Leather – Goat, cow and sheep leather are common. Comfortable, tough and water resistant yet slippery when wet.
- Polyester – Breathable, absorbs sweat, but not water resistant.
- Nylon – Tough and flexible and often used to add dexterity to joints in leather gloves.
- Spandex – Flexible and stretchy, offering great dexterity.
- Thinsulate – Very thin and dexterous offering better insulation than fleece.
- Nomex – Used in the fire industry, Nomex safety tactical gloves are fire resistant.
- Kevlar – Slash and cut resistant and commonly used by law and military personnel.
- Neoprene Gloves – Water resistant (used in wetsuits) and a great insulator against heat and cold.
- Thermoplastic Rubber – Water resistant and commonly used for palm and knuckle padding, and to provide grip.
Types of Tactical Gloves
It is vitally important to choose the right tactical gloves. Will you be using your gloves for combat duty, on the shooting range, or out in extreme weather where protecting your hands will be the highest priority?
