While most of the focus was on the goalscoring talents of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe during the thrilling 2022 World Cup final between Argentina and France, it was a goalkeeper who helped the South Americans to the trophy.

Emi Martinez denied Kingsley Coman from the spot during a tense penalty shootout, with Gonzalo Montiel converting to seal a first World Cup trophy for Argentina since 1986.

Both Martinez and France captain Hugo Lloris went into the final as contenders for the prestigious Golden Glove, with goalkeepers already eliminated from the tournament also in with a chance.

How is the Golden Glove decided?

Simply, the Golden Glove is handed out to the best goalkeeper at the World Cup. Who wins is decided by the FIFA Technical Study Group, which assesses each goalkeeper’s performance throughout the tournament.

It was known as the Lev Yashin Award until 2006, in honour of the legendary Russian keeper. Previous winners include Thibaut Courtois, Gianluigi Buffon and Olivier Kahn.

Who has won the Golden Glove award?

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has won the Golden Glove for the 2022 World Cup having kept three clean sheets during the tournament ahead of his heroic shootout display in the final. He had also been the hero for Argentina in their quarter-final shootout win over Netherlands, saving two penalties from Virgil van Dijk and Teun Koopmeiners

Morocco’s Yassine Bounou was also in contention following a standout tournament, while Croatia’s Dominik Livakovic, France’s Hugo Lloris and Poland’s Wojciech Szczesny were also considered.
