Killers Of The Flower Moon marks Apple’s first high-profile theatrical release after the company partnered with Paramount Pictures to manage distribution, Variety reported. Killers Of The Flower Moon is set to become a prominent offering on Apple’s streaming service when it arrives on the platform next week.
The blockbuster film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone, and Robert De Niro, and is based on David Grann’s non-fiction book of the same name, which recounts a large string of murders committed against the Osage tribe, who held rights to Oklahoma oil fields in the 1920s. Hundreds of Osage were involved in making the film, according to Time.

When asked why he wanted to tell this story, Scorsese explained the reason to Deadline earlier this year. “What I responded to when I read David Grann’s book was the natural order of things. The idea that one could rationalize that if the Osage are not going to be of any use, if they’re going to be phased out anyway, why don’t we just, you know, help them go,” the acclaimed director said. “And, ultimately, do we really feel any guilt for that? I don’t mean you and I, but when you’re doing what was being done to the Osage, and if you tend to dehumanize someone…”

He continued: “Do [the Osage] behave differently, culturally? Yes, on all levels. There’s no way they could fit in to the European model, the capitalist model, in terms of money and private property. So, then [the attitude is] we’re coming, and we’re not going away. Either you join us, or you have to go. Now, we love and admire you, by the way, but it’s just that your time is up.”
In October, Killers Of The Flower Moon opened with $23.2 million domestically and $44 million worldwide at the box office — a fraction of the movie’s reported $200 million budget. Despite the film’s lackluster performance in cinemas, Rotten Tomatoes’ verified film critics gave the Scorsese title an impressive 93% approval rating.
