DSM Logo

The most relevant and commonly used long-term for DSM in cars is Diamond Star Motors, which was an honest vehicle company that closed down in 1993.

About Diamond Star Motors

Diamond-Star Motors began as a 50-50 partnership between Chrysler and Mitsubishi. However, in 1991, Mitsubishi Motors bought out its partner’s stake, and Chrysler automobiles were only manufactured on a contract basis after that.

Mitsubishi Motors Manufacturing America (MMMA) was renamed Diamond-Star Motors on July 1, 1995, after Mitsubishi acquired Chrysler’s stock holding in 1993. Despite the split, the two firms continued to collaborate on other production projects, considering all vehicles built until 1995 to be Diamond Star Motors.

While DSMs are well-known for their turbocharged and all-wheel-drive configurations, it is important to note that not every Mitsubishi-built vehicle from the 1990s is turbocharged, and all-wheel drive does not define a DSM.

How to Identify a DSM Quickly

When trying to identify a DSM, it’s helpful to know what vehicles fall under this category. Here are a few examples:

  • The 1989-1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse is a DSM.
  • The 1989-1994 Plymouth Laser is a DSM.
  • The 1989-1998 Eagle Talon is a DSM.

On the other hand, the 2000-up Mitsubishi Eclipse, Galant VR4, and 3000GT VR4 are not classified as DSMs. Similarly, the Evo is not considered a DSM.

More about DSM Company

Diamond-Star Motors initially began as a facility jointly owned by Chrysler and Mitsubishi. However, in 1991, Mitsubishi acquired majority ownership, and the company was renamed Mitsubishi Motors Manufacturing America (MMMA) on July 1, 1995. Despite the split, the two companies continued to collaborate on other production projects, and vehicles built until 1995 were still considered Diamond Star Motors.

The facility manufactured cars based on the Mitsubishi PS platform, such as the Endeavor, Galant, and Eclipse. The factory was expanded to 2,400,000 square feet in 2003. In mid-2012, the facility started building the Mitsubishi RVR platform, known as the Outlander Sport in the United States.

The company announced the closure of its Normal factory in July 2015 due to running at a fraction of its capacity. The majority of employees were laid off, and manufacturing ceased in November, with the facility closing permanently in May 2016.

Types of DSM Cars and Examples

When considering what DSM stands for in cars, it’s important to understand the two main types of DSM vehicles made by the company: 1G DSM and 2G DSM models.

1G DSM Vehicles

The 1G DSM vehicles were all powered by Mitsubishi’s 4G63 Sirius 4-cylinder engine, available with either front- or all-wheel drive. The engine remained the same for all trim levels of the vehicle.

1G DSM Vehicles

Midway through production, the 1G DSM received a makeover. The 1989-1991 “1Ga” models had pop-up headlights, while the facelifted 1992-1994 “1Gb” versions featured composite headlights.

2G DSM Vehicles

The 2G DSMs had a distinct design change, featuring sheet metal with more generous curves. The “cheese wedge” design was replaced, but the “power bulge” on the bonnet remained, even though it was no longer necessary. The Plymouth Laser was discontinued, leaving only the Eclipse and Talon models.

2G DSM Vehicles

The Eclipse GST & GSX, Talon TSi & TSi AWD, and Talon TSi & TSi AWD turbocharged vehicles continued to use upgraded versions of the legendary 4G63 engine, available in front- or all-wheel-drive configurations.
