Why Is Fortnite Asking For My Date Of Birth

With Chapter 4 Season 1, Fortnite might be bringing various welcomed surprises to its player bases, such as Geralt and My Hero Academia skins and other new features among other. But another unexpected thing also shows up when you log in to the game: Fortnite is asking its players for their birthdays for some reason.

So Why is Fortnite Asking for People’s Birthdays?

Fortnite is asking for users’ birthdays because Epic Games just introduced a brand-new system dubbed Cabined Accounts. This new system will allow players under the age of 13 to play Fortnite and other Epic-published games like usual but under certain conditions in a bid to provide younger players with “safe and inclusive” gaming environments.

“We ask for your date of birth to enable us to apply settings that ensure the best experience for all players. Depending on your age and the country where you live, some features or content may not be available to you until you are older or until you have permission from a parent or guardian.”

Unlike the standard, “normal” Epic accounts, several restrictions are given to Cabined Accounts (see below). The parent or guardian’s email address will be contacted. Once they complete setting up your account and provide consent, Cabined Accounts may gain access to any locked features — depending on the permissions set by their parent or guardian in Epic’s Parental Controls.

Nevertheless, while waiting for parental consent, players with Cabined Accounts will still be able to play Fortnite, Rocket League, or Fall Guys but won’t be able to access certain features.

List of Things that Epic Games Cabined Account Cannot Do

  • Communicating with other players using voice chat or free text chat.
  • Purchasing items with real money.
  • Downloading games that are not owned by Epic.
  • Seeing recommendations based on past activity.
  • Registering to email marketing or push notifications.
  • Trading in Rocket League.
  • Sign in with Epic, including linking accounts to certain external services, such as social media websites or video streaming applications.
  • Making custom display names.
  • Using SMS-based two-factor authentication.

Lately, various big-name developers and publishers have increased their attempts to curb online toxicity and abuses. Along with Epic, recently Activision Blizzard ran its Defense Matrix Initiative, while Riot Games and Ubisoft are doing an AI-based collaboration called Zero Harm in Comms.

Now that you have learned why Fortnite is asking for your birthday don’t forget to tell your parents or guardians and check your privacy settings to make sure your account works like it used to.
