When Do Schools Start In Rhode Island

As the summer winds down to a close and the new school year waits right around the corner, the question on parents’ and students’ minds is when is the first day of school?

The state Department of Education requires that the first day of school be no later than the first Thursday after Labor Day, which this year means Sept. 7.

While some schools have chosen to start after Labor Day, others will begin in late August. Below is a full list of start dates for public schools in Rhode Island, in alphabetical order by school district.

Barrington

Barrington Public Schools start on Aug. 28.

Bristol Warren

The Bristol Warren Regional School District starts on Sept. 6.

Burrillville

Burrillville Public Schools start on Aug. 30 for grades 1-12. Kindergarten students with last names A-L start Aug. 31, and last names M-Z start Sept. 1.

Central Falls

The Central Falls Schools District starts on Aug. 30.

Chariho

The Chariho Regional School District starts on Sept. 5.

Coventry

Aug. 30 is the first day for Coventry Public Schools.

Cranston

In the Cranston Public School District, grades K, 1, 6 and 9 start on Aug. 31, and all other students start on Sept. 1.

Cumberland

Grades 1-9 in the Cumberland School Department start on Sept. 5, and grades pre-K, K and 10-12 start on Sept. 6.

East Greenwich

East Greenwich Public Schools start on Sept. 5 for grades 1-12. Kindergarten begins on Sept. 8.

East Providence

Grades pre-K, 1-6, and 9 start on Aug. 30, while kindergarten and grades 10-12 start on Aug. 31 in the East Providence School District.

Exeter-West Greenwich

Exeter-West Greenwich Regional School District starts on Aug. 30 for grades 1-9 and Aug. 31 for pre-K, K and 10-12.

Foster-Glocester Regional School District

Foster-Glocester Regional School District starts on Aug. 30.

Glocester

Glocester Public Schools start on Aug. 30.

Jamestown

Per the Jamestown School Department calendar, grades K-8 start on Sept. 5, and pre-K students start on Sept. 6.

Johnston

The Johnston Public School District starts on Aug. 30.

Lincoln

At the Lincoln Public School District, grades pre-K and 1-9 start Aug. 30, grades 10-12 start Aug. 31, and kindergarten starts Sept. 5.

Little Compton

The Little Compton School Department starts on Aug. 29.

Middletown

Middletown Public Schools start on Sept. 6.

Narragansett

The Narragansett school system starts on Sept. 5.

Newport

Newport Public Schools start on Sept. 6.

New Shoreham

Students K-12 at Block Island School start on Sept. 6.

North Kingstown

Per the North Kingstown School Department calendar, grades 1-9 start on Sept. 5, and grades pre-K, K and 10-12 start on Sept. 6.

North Providence

Grades pre-K-9 start Aug. 29, and grades 10-12 start Aug. 30 in the North Providence School Department.

North Smithfield

North Smithfield Public Schools start on Aug. 30.

Pawtucket

Aug. 30 is the first day of school for the Pawtucket School Department.

Portsmouth

The Portsmouth School Department starts on Aug. 29 for grades K, 5 and 9, and Aug. 30 for all other students.

Providence

The Providence Public School District starts on Sept. 6.

Scituate

Scituate Public Schools start on Aug. 30.

Smithfield

Aug. 29 is the first day of school for Smithfield Public Schools.

South Kingstown

South Kingstown Public Schools start on Sept. 5.

Tiverton

Tiverton Public Schools start on Aug. 31.

Warwick

Sept. 5 is the first day of school for Warwick Public Schools.

Westerly

Westerly Public Schools start on Sept. 5.

West Warwick

At West Warwick Public Schools, grades 1-12 begin Aug. 29, and pre-K and kindergarten begin Aug. 30.

Woonsocket

Grades 1-9 start Aug. 30, and grades 10-12 start Aug. 31, according to the Woonsocket Education Department. Kindergartners with last names A-L start Aug. 30, and last names M-Z start Aug. 31.
