Oppenheimer Dominates Critics Choice Awards 2024 with Eight Wins

Oppenheimer emerged as the frontrunner of this year’s awards season, bagging a total of eight Critics Choice Awards, including the coveted Best Picture and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. The Critics Choice Awards, held in Santa Monica, showcased the brilliance of Oppenheimer, leaving summer rival Barbie trailing with six wins, notably securing Best Comedy.

In a surprising turn of events, Emma Stone won Best Actress for Searchlight’s “Poor Things,” after Lily Gladstone’s triumph at the Golden Globes. Stone had previously won a Globe for her comedic performance, but the Critics Choice Awards do not differentiate between genres. Meanwhile, Paul Giamatti repeated his success from the Globes by taking home the Best Actor award for Focus Features’ “The Holdovers.”

Oppenheimer’s success extended beyond the major categories. The film also secured accolades for Best Acting Ensemble, Visual Effects, Editing, Cinematography, and Score. Robert Downey Jr. followed up his Golden Globe win for Supporting Actor, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph of “The Holdovers” replicated her victory as Supporting Actress.

Barbie, the top-grossing film of 2023, also had an impressive showing, earning wins for Original Screenplay, Production Design, Costume Design, Hair and Makeup, and Best Song for “I’m Just Ken.” Songwriter Mark Ronson lauded writer-director Greta Gerwig from the stage, expressing gratitude for the inclusion of an 11-minute prog rock power ballad dream ballet shredfest, allowing male viewers to experience emotional moments too.

In television, there was a sense of déjà vu as the Golden Globe winners mirrored their success at the Critics Choice Awards. Netflix’s “Beef,” HBO’s “Succession,” and FX’s “The Bear” emerged victorious in the Best Limited Series, Drama Series, and Comedy Series categories, respectively. Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook took home Best Actor and Actress in a Drama for “Succession,” while Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri were awarded Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series for “The Bear.” Ali Wong and Steven Yeun received Best Actress and Actor in a Limited Series or Made for TV Film for “Beef.”

The small-screen supporting categories witnessed remarkable performances from Billy Crudup and Elizabeth Debicki, who won Best Supporting Actor and Actress in a Drama Series for “The Morning Show” and “The Crown,” respectively. Ebon Moss-Bachrach of “The Bear” and Meryl Streep of “Only Murders in the Building” claimed the supporting prizes for comedy. Maria Bello and Jonathan Bailey were recognized as Supporting Actress and Actor in a Limited Series or Telefilm for “Beef” and Showtime’s “Fellow Travelers,” respectively.

Universal Pictures emerged as the leading film distributor with eight wins, all accredited to Oppenheimer. Warner Bros followed closely behind with six victories for Barbie. Netflix dominated the television category with eight wins, outperforming FX and HBO, both with four wins each.

The Critics Choice Awards also celebrated the outstanding contributions of several individuals. Margot Robbie presented the SeeHer Award to America Ferrera, her castmate from Barbie, while James Mangold honored Harrison Ford with the Career Achievement Award.

Hosted by Chelsea Handler, the ceremony offered a humorous start as she playfully teased her ex-boyfriend Jo Koy during her opening monologue.

The leading nominees for the Critics Choice Awards were Barbie with 18 nominations, followed by Oppenheimer and “Poor Things” with 13 each. “Killers of the Flower Moon” garnered 12 nominations. Among television series, “The Morning Show” received the most nominations with six, closely followed by “Succession” with five. Other notable contenders with four nominations each included “Abbott Elementary,” “The Bear,” “Beef,” “Lessons In Chemistry,” “Loki,” “Reservation Dogs,” and “A Small Light.”
