Where Was Mission Impossible Filmed

The wait for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 is over.

Tom Cruise is back as Ethan Hunt, which means Europe also returns to the silver screen as a favorite Mission: Impossible backdrop.

Let’s see where the IMF team’s latest adventure has taken them and where you can visit the real life filming locations for Mission Impossible 7.

Mission Impossible 7 Filming Locations

Your mission, reader, should you choose to accept it, is to find these Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 filming locations.

As always, should you or any member of your travel group be caught snapping selfies at these iconic locations, then my editor will disavow any knowledge of your actions (unless you tag us @trainline) of course.

Where is Mission Impossible 7 filmed?

Mission: Impossible – DRP1 revisited Norway, the United Kingdom, and Italy for filming. Hellesylt and Møre og Romsdal opened the film showcasing Norway’s gorgeous fjords and one heck of an epic stunt.

Meanwhile, Italy once again stole the screen by treating us to views of Venice and Rome. From Ponte Minich and The Doge’s Palace to the Spanish Steps, it’s a shame that Ethan Hunt couldn’t experience these stunning locations without fighting for his life.

Where was the Mission Impossible 7 motorcycle stunt filmed?

Tom Cruise kicked off his first day of filming Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One with one of the craziest stunts of the year: riding a motorcycle off of the Helsetkopen mountain cliff in Hellesylt, Norway, then effectively base jumping down onto a moving train.

Trust us, there are safer ways to catch a last-minute train, and for a lot cheaper than renting a motorcycle and parachute.

Where was Mission Impossible 7 filmed in the UK?

The UK’s scenes for M:I 7 went beyond the Greater London area to feature Bedfordshire, North Yorkshire, Derbyshire, and Birmingham. Marvelously, our rail culture got a little love, too.

Birmingham Central Rail Station hosted the interior shots for what acted as the Abu Dhabi International Airport in the movie. The small village of Stoney Middleton showed off its Darlton Quarry during the train crashing sequence (we teared up a tad when seeing the poor railcars meet their fate).

Is the aquarium restaurant in Mission: Impossible real?

Sadly, the Akvárium restaurant was built for the film on a London studio set. That shouldn’t stop you from taking the train from Vienna or Berlin to Prague where the real-life Old Town Square has loads of great restaurants.

Where is the pub at the end of Mission: Impossible?

The Akvárium may not be real, but the pub at the end of Mission: Impossible is. You can find The Anchor – Bankside in London between the Southwark Bridge and Cannon Street Railway Bridge. Take the Underground to London Bridge then walk a few paces west.

How many Mission: Impossible movies were filmed in Europe?

Ethan Hunt used Europe as a backdrop for his adventures throughout the entire Mission: Impossible franchise, with the exception of M:I-2 which was filmed exclusively in the USA and Australia. Our few of our favorite filming locations include:

Naples, Italy | Mission: Impossible III

Despite being 140 miles away, the Royal Palace of Caserta stood in for the Vatican. Rome features heavily in M:I3 and a day trip to Naples to see the faux Vatican is actually quite quick.

Prague, Czech Republic | Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

While we wish the real Budapest Keleti train station got more love than just its exterior, M:I’s return to Prague featured the Hlavni-Nadrazi train station as a stand-in. Thankfully, both cities’ stations are linked by an affordable train you can easily take.

Vienna, Austria | Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation

If there’s one site to see in Vienna, it’s the Wiener Staatsoper. M:I 6 featured the Vienna State Opera House, complete with music from the renowned Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Vienna’s main train station is a major train hub for Central Europe.

Paris, France | Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Technically, Tom Cruise did a HALO jump Abu Dhabi and, in the magic of filmmaking, landed in Paris. Still, when his boots hit the ground, we were delighted to see landmarks like the Seine River and Arc de Triomphe.

Mission: Possible—by train

You don’t need a parachute to see all of the cities featured in the Mission: Impossible series. Download the Trainline app and discover just how many destinations are accessible via Europe’s quick and convenient railways.
