Elemental features an original language spoken by Fire elements but what exactly is the language and what does the word ‘Ashfa’ mean?
Pixar has always been exceptional at delving into poignant topics through the lens of its animated movies and the studio’s latest effort, Elemental, is no different as it explores matters such as immigration and xenophobia by telling a story of characters who are made of various elements, such as fire, water and earth.

What language do the Fire elements use in Elemental?
The language used by Fire elements in Elemental is known as ‘Firish.’
To help create the original language, Pixar drafted in conlanger David Peterson, who has constructed fictional languages for the fantasy epic Game of Thrones and the sci-fi movie Dune.
In the case of Elemental, Firish is inspired by several Slavic languages and dialects but has been given its own fiery feel.

For the most part, the language goes untranslated during the film, which is probably for the best in certain scenes, such as when Ember unleashes her hot-headed temper on a pair of Water elements, who were misbehaving in the store, and yells at them in Firish.

What does Ashfa mean in Elemental?
‘Ashfa’ means ‘Father’ in Elemental’s Firish language.
Throughout the early scenes of the film, when we see young Ember helping out at her father Bernie’s store, she often calls him by the name, Ashfa.
As Ember’s father’s real name is Bernie, it’s clear that this must be another noun she’s using to refer to her old man.
The word is unfamiliar at first, but its translation as ‘father’ quickly becomes clear after she uses it repeatedly when speaking with her dad.

After releasing during a crowded summer blockbuster window, Elemental arrived on Disney+ on Wednesday, September 13, and is now available for fans to stream at home.
The film originally hit theaters on June 16, and suffered one of Pixar’s lowest box office openings, prompting fears of another Lightyear-esque bomb.
However, as the summer moviegoing season continued, Elemental defied expectations to become a sleeper hit, earning $478 million at the box office.
Now, the film’s debut on streaming will give more people that chance to watch the charming and thought-provoking film.

Elemental is available to stream on Disney+ after landing on the streaming service on Wednesday, September 13, 2023.
