If you’re planning a wedding, you might have come across the term Jack and Jill while searching the web for wedding ideas. But what does it mean? Is is a co-ed shower? Is it a fundraiser for the couple? Is it a little of both? Let’s unpack this and see exactly what is a Jack and Jill:

Tradition

Historically, a Jack and Jill was a celebration before the wedding in order to raise money for the couple. An example of this would be holding a party and charging invited guests an admissions fee of ~$5, which would go toward the engaged couple. Another example would be charging for drinks, or even holding a raffle. Because it’s not a bridal shower per se, you can invite both guys and gals, as both the bride- and groom-to-be will be attending.

A Modern Twist

Today, Jack and Jills have evolved so as to not be so conservative and rigid in their ways. This is where the co-ed shower comes in. You can choose either to or not to charge guests and admissions fee. You should not that if you do charge admission, your guests might not bring gifts or even that fewer guests may attend. If you choose not to charge admissions, you can have small raffles, such as ‘Guess how many jellybeans are in the jar!’ and charge a couple dollars. You can also take this opportunity to liven things up a bit with games, food, props, and prizes, among others. Additionally, the location is entirely up to you. Will it be at a bar, a restaurant, or a venue like Danversport Yacht Club? Or will it be a homier affair, such as a backyard BBQ, a wine and cheese party, or a cocktail party? Do they want a wild party to just let loose. It all depends on the wishes of the couple.
