Where Was Killers Of The Flower Moon Filmed

Killers of the Flower Moon takes viewers back to a dark period in Oklahoma’s history. Adapted from journalist and author David Grann’s 2017 bestselling book, Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, the Martin Scorsese-directed film is based on the true story of the suspicious murders of members of the Osage Nation in the 1920s. Whether you plan to catch the western crime saga in theaters or wait for it to hit streaming, you’re likely curious about where it was filmed. It turns out the movie was actually filmed in the area where the tragedies actually took place. Below, browse everything we know about the featured filming locations.

What True Story Is Killers of the Flower Moon Based On?

Killers of the Flower Moon is based on what became known as the Reign of Terror. During the early 1920s, members of the Osage Nation were murdered after they became wealthy from the discovery of oil underneath their land in Oklahoma. While estimates vary, approximately 24 members suspiciously died in or near the town of Fairfax, according to the Oklahoma Historical Society. The conspiracy, concocted by the Texas native and affluent rancher William K. Hale, became the U.S. Bureau of Investigation’s first major homicide investigation and led to the reconstitution of it as today’s FBI.

Inspired by the conspiracy, Killers of the Flower Moon recenters the story on the real-life romance of Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), who was the nephew of Hale (Robert De Niro), and Osage member Mollie Kyle (Lily Gladstone).

Where Was Killers of the Flower Moon Filmed?

Filming took place in the same state where the movie is set and where the real crimes took place: Oklahoma. With a $200 million budget, the film is believed to be the biggest movie production ever filmed in the state. The production was specifically filmed in the towns of Pawhuska, Fairfax, and Bartlesville. “To be able to tell this story on the land where these events took place is incredibly important and critical to allowing us to portray an accurate depiction of the time and people,” Scorsese said in a statement.

According to The Oklahoman, building facades were constructed along Kihekah Avenue in Pawhuska to resemble downtown Fairfax in the 1920s. Fans of Food Network star Ree Drummond may know Pawhuska as the town where she launched her lifestyle empire and currently resides. Her shop Pioneer Woman Mercantile exists on Kihekah Avenue. (The Drummond family is now the largest landholder in Osage County, according to Bloomberg.) The outlet also reported that a facade was built in front of a church in Fairfax to make it look like an early 20th-century Catholic church. The remains of a freight building on the Midland Valley Railroad depot site also were altered to look like a 1920s train station. Bartlesville was tapped to house the cast and crew, production offices, and a soundstage.
