How Do People Store Gloves

So, you have made a well-informed decision, getting a few series of gloves for yourself or your workers, but you may still wonder how to make the investment as successful as possible. My suggestion is to store gloves correctly and keep them well maintained, so they last longer, just like your car.

To maximize the protection a safety glove can give, it’s necessary to go further than just purchasing the right pair and wearing them regularly. It is equally important to maintain the gloves to remain in tip-top condition for as long as possible. It extends the lifespan of the gloves and saves money in the long run.

The first step is to go through the user manual as it has relevant information about how to store and maintain the gloves. Additionally, I have gathered a few general tips and tricks I think is worth sharing with you:

Store gloves correctly

“Keep in a dry, cool and dark place” is a phrase you surely have seen on storage instructions for other products. For gloves, this is important and the easiest way to make sure that gloves last longer. You should follow these instructions even between uses. Ensure the gloves are stored away from chemicals as gloves can be contaminated and decrease the lifespan.

Examine the gloves regularly. If there is visible signs of wear and tear, or excessive oil and dirt saturation, do not hesitate to discard the gloves and get a replacement.

Gloves should be kept clean and dry when it is not in use. Wipe off any dirt or stains from the gloves between use.

Consider laundering the gloves whenever possible. Everyone likes to wear clean gloves. Even if you only launder them 1-2 times, the savings you make are substantial.

Leather gloves

Clean leather gloves regularly with a damp cloth or with a mild detergent for stubborn stains. You can even handwash leather gloves in max 30°C, but don’t use a dryer or tumble dryer. Leather lasts longer if kept free from grit, dirt, and grime.

Avoid exposing leather gloves to extreme heat or cold that could cause the leather to dry out and crack. Continuous UV rays from the sun also cause damage.

Specialized gloves

Specialized gloves can only do their job for as long as they remain in top condition. Example of these gloves includes high voltage gloves, chemical resistant gloves etc

The correct way to store rubber gloves (usually for high voltage or chemical resistance) is in a cool, dark place away from any heat or steam sources. They should be kept in their original undamaged packaging. Avoid folding the gloves as it might distort their shape and, in the worst case, affect the glove properties. Regularly examine the gloves for holes, tears, or cracks, making sure the gloves are fully intact.

For specialized gloves, it is essential to follow the instructions for use. For example, high voltage insulating gloves need to be retested by a lab once a year to ensure adequate glove protection.
