New research from Tenga reveals that the majority of women tend to use their minds when they masturbate, with 54% of women of the 2,000 UK adults surveyed reporting they immerse themselves in a sexual fantasy in order to masturbate.
That’s more common in women than men – 44% of men say they use sexual fantasies to get off.
Porn, meanwhile, is more of a man’s game.
66% of men use porn when they masturbate, versus just 35% of women. Perhaps that’s because the majority of porn caters to the male gaze, right?

Another popular masturbation tool is thinking about past sexual experiences, which 26% of men and 24% of women do while wanking.
Less popular are erotic stories (15% of women and 10% of men use sexy literature to masturbate), pictures (just 9% of women use still images for masturbation purposes), and music (only 4% of women and 3% of men use music for a self-love sesh.
The research discovered some other interesting masturbation stats.
Women are more likely to use a sex toy when masturbating, with 88% of women owning a vibrator versus just 11% of men using any kind of toy in their masturbation routine.
The reasons people masturbate are fairly similar across gender. 29% of women and 26% of men masturbate purely for reasons of pleasure, 18% of women and 23% of men do it to relieve sexual tension, and 14% use it to reduce stress.

Interestingly, women are more likely to use masturbation to send themselves to sleep – 8% of women compared to 3% of men said they used self-love as a sleeping tool – as well as to improve their relationship with their body.

‘I’m hearing from increasing numbers of people who are concerned with improving their “sleep hygiene”, developing healthy habits and relaxation rituals that support a healthy night’s sleep and improve daytime alertness.
‘Masturbation provides a drug-free, cost-free way of winding down; with old stigmas and misinformation about self-touch slowly being eroded.
‘I wonder if in the coming years we’ll see growing numbers of women regularly self-pleasuring at bedtime, not just to get off and get those Big Os, but also to help themselves get some Zzzz.’
