Rawlings will begin awarding Gold Gloves to utility players from the American and National Leagues, effective this season, the company announced Tuesday. This is in addition to the nine Gold Gloves given to the top defensive position players in each league.
“We’re thrilled to finally introduce a Rawlings Gold Glove Award that recognizes players with the superior defensive ability to play multiple positions,” Mike Thompson, chief marketing officer for Rawlings, said in a statement. “Utility players are some of the most versatile athletes you’ll see on the field, and it’s time for them to be rewarded for their tremendous defense, alongside position players.”

To earn consideration for a Gold Glove as a position player, an infielder or outfielder must have played in the field for at least 713 innings through his team’s 141st game. It’s not yet known if utility players will be subject to the same innings requirement. Pitchers must pitch in 141 innings of their teams’ first 141 games and catchers must play in a minimum of 71 of their teams’ first 141 games to qualify.
Rawlings has made other changes in recent years to who can receive Gold Glove consideration. The innings requirement didn’t always exist, which resulted in Rafael Palmeiro winning in 1999 despite playing only 28 games at first base. Gold Glove winners were named for each outfield position in the first four years of the award (1957-60), but for decades afterward the honors could go to any three outfielders, regardless of position. That changed in 2011, when awards were given to a left fielder, right fielder and center fielder in each league.

Rawlings added analytics to the mix in 2013 when it included the SABR Defensive Index. The Gold Glove and Platinum Glove Awards are still mostly based on a combination of votes from managers and coaches (who cannot vote for players on their own team). But the SDI portion — which encompasses two sets of defensive metrics — now accounts for approximately 25 percent of the selection process, with the votes from managers and coaches making up the rest.
Rawlings will announce the Gold Glove finalists on Nov. 3 and announce the winners on Nov. 8.
