When Is Artichoke Season

It’s no secret that fresh food is the best food, and artichokes are no exception to this simple truth. With that in mind, in this article, we explain when artichokes are in season, along with other interesting facts about artichokes.

When Are Artichokes in Season?

Artichokes are large perennial plants native to the western and central Mediterranean, best known for their edible flower buds.

Yes, you read that right: the artichokes we consume are actually flower buds! The artichoke flowers are pink or purple and beautiful in their own right.

The artichoke season changes depending on where you leave.

In the United States, artichokes reach their peak from March through May, although they remain available throughout the year.

As a side note, California produces most of the artichokes consumed in the United states.

For people living in the southern hemisphere (in Australia, for example), artichoke season runs from May to November, reaching its peak between August and October.

Some Interesting Facts About Artichokes

Although the artichoke plant has been known since antiquity, the first recorded mention of artichoke flower buds used as food dates back to 1400 in Italy.

Since then, artichokes have become an important ingredient in the cuisine of countries like Italy itself, but also France and Spain.

Known for their characteristic nut-like flavor, artichokes can be served roasted, steamed, grilled, or boiled.
