  • Depressants: increase the production of neurotransmitter GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric acid), which in turn reduce nervous system activity and induces sleep e.g. Benzodiazepines.
  • Narcotics: These stimulate the release of endorphins which are neurotransmitters that reduces pain, hence used as analgesics e.g. morphine and codeine.
  • Hallucinogens: These are warped a person’s sense of time and space hence tricking the brain into seeing or hearing things that aren’t actually present i.e. hallucination. e.g. LSD.
