This Thanksgiving, Walt Disney Animation Studios is releasing its latest animated film, “Wish”, in cinemas around the world. The film is an all-new musical-comedy welcoming audiences to the magical kingdom of Rosas, where Asha, a sharp-witted idealist, makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star confront a most formidable foe—the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico—to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.
The film features the voices of Academy Award-winning actor Ariana DeBose as Asha, Chris Pine as Magnifico, and Alan Tudyk as Asha’s favourite goat, Valentino. Also starring in the film are Angelique Cabral as Queen Amaya, Victor Garber as Asha’s grandfather, Sabino, and Natasha Rothwell as Asha’s loving and supportive mom, Sakina.

Currently, no official Disney+ release date has yet been announced for “Wish”, but taking a look at some of the previous films’ release dates, should give us a better indication of how quickly a film arrives on Disney+.
- “Haunted Mansion” arrived on Disney+ after 68 days
- “Elemental” was released on Disney+ after 89 days
- “The Little Mermaid” splashed onto Disney+ after 103 days
- “Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol 3” blasted on Disney+ after 89 days
- “Strange World” arrived on Disney+ after 30 days
- “Encanto” danced its way onto Disney+ after 30 days
- “Lightyear” dropped on Disney+ after 47 days
Over the last two years, Disney has been releasing its Thanksgiving theatrical releases, like “Strange World” and “Encanto”, on to Disney+ just over a month later, just in time to give the movies a huge boost in viewership over Christmas.
However, both of those movies did perform very badly at the box office, and Disney’s animated studios are desperately trying to boost box office numbers after years of badly performing films, due to a variety of reasons. One of those big reasons, is when Disney sent some animated films like “Soul”, “Turning Red”, and “Luca” to Disney+ due to the pandemic, plus releasing other films like “Onward”, “Lightyear”, “Strange World” and “Encanto” to Disney+ within six weeks of their theatrical release. Disney has set expectations from families; they can just wait, and it’ll be on Disney+ soon.
This all changed in 2023, when Disney started extending how fast a film would be released on Disney+, and with the exception of “Haunted Mansion”, which was rushed onto Disney+ to make the most of the Halloween viewing season, most of this year’s theatrical releases have taken around three months to arrive on Disney+.

For this reason, I’d estimate, we are likely to see “Wish” arrive on Disney+ in late February 2024.
