Who Lives At 722 North Elm Drive

No Ghosts

The Beverly Hills mansion where entertainment executive Jose Menendez and his wife, Kitty, were shotgunned to death in 1989 by their two sons has been sold by television producer William Link and his wife, Marjorie, for $3.7 million, according to informed sources.

Buying the 9,063-square-foot, Mediterranean-style house at 722 N. Elm Drive is Sam DeLug, who is believed to be a telecom company executive, sources said.

It’s not the first time the Links have tried to unload the infamous estate, which they bought in 1993. They listed it at just under $4 million in 1997, but then took it off the market about a year later when it didn’t sell. The Links then relisted the house last April for $4.2 million.

Agent Joyce Rey of Coldwell Banker represented the Links in the deal.

Asked if she had been spooked when showing prospective buyers the den where Lyle and Eric murdered their parents while watching a James Bond movie on TV, Rey said, “Not at all. The house was absolutely fine.”

Wake Up Call

In a recent talk on regional airport growth, L.A. County Supervisor Don Knabe admitted that even though he lives miles away from Los Angeles International Airport, he has a personal stake in capping the growth in passengers and flights there.

“I realize I have a lot of clout,” Knabe quipped to the business and political leaders attending the luncheon. “I have so much clout that the airlines have indeed rerouted their planes on approach into LAX. They have rerouted those planes right over my house at 3:15 a.m. and 5:30 a.m.”

Just Kidding

The political comedy troupe Capitol Steps stopped in at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center recently, and, amid their dated jabs at former President Bill Clinton and the current First Family, they managed to get in a jab at California Gov. Gray Davis.

In a skit featuring a Dick Tracy-type private investigator sent to California to “get to the bottom of the electricity problem,” the investigator took dead aim at Davis:

“I saw that Gray Davis was issuing more denials than an NBA player on Father’s Day,” the faux investigator said.

Moonlighting Reporter

Why is Weber Shandwick, one of L.A.’s largest public relations firms, fighting hard for a contract worth only $25,000?

Because the contract to teach media relations to California Highway Patrol officials was awarded to a television reporter whose work includes covering the department. That’s unethical, according to Eric Rose, managing director of public affairs for Weber Shandwick.

“We’re pursuing this purely as a matter of principle,” he said.

The state Department of General Services was expected to soon rule on the matter.
