Delving into the Story

Last time, in our previous “Behind the Scenes” installment, we witnessed the miraculous birth of Isaac. Now, we delve into one of the most intense moments in Abraham and Isaac’s lives: when God demands the sacrifice of Isaac.

As the Scripture states, “After these things God tested Abraham and said to him, ‘Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ He said, ‘Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.'” (Gen. 22:1-2 ESV)

While the exact age of Isaac at this time is unknown, since Abraham referred to him as “the boy,” we can infer that he was 12 years old or younger. Isaac was old enough to handle the task of carrying the wood to the altar. In iBIBLE’s portrayal, we present Isaac as approximately 10 years old.

The Test of Faith

The reason behind God’s request to sacrifice Isaac has sparked numerous interpretations and theories. However, the Scriptures make it clear that God was testing Abraham’s faith (Gen. 22:1).

Imagine the weight of emotion that Abraham must have felt during this extraordinary request. God emphasized that Isaac was Abraham’s “only son” and the son “whom he loved.” Although Abraham had another son, Ishmael, he was not the “son of promise” from God.

Abraham and Sarah had endured a 25-year wait for the fulfillment of God’s promise of a son. Sarah miraculously gave birth to Isaac at the age of 99. God had assured Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars and the sands. So, how could this demand to sacrifice Isaac possibly align with God’s previous promises? It seemed contradictory.

Nevertheless, Abraham had unwavering trust in his Creator and recognized His voice. Without hesitation, he resolved to carry out God’s command.

“So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him, and his son Isaac. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.” (Gen. 22:3)

The Journey to Moriah

Abraham embarked on a three-day journey to the land of Moriah. The Scriptures do not reveal the thoughts or emotions that Abraham experienced during this time. There is no mention of him pleading with God or questioning His instructions. On the third day, when Abraham caught sight of the location in the distance, he instructed his companions to wait while he and Isaac proceeded alone.

“On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar. Then Abraham said to his young men, ‘Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.’ And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So, they went both of them together.” (Gen. 22:4-6)

The Bigger Picture

We will conclude this event in our next “Behind the Scenes” article, where we will explore the profound parallels between Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac and God sending His only Son, Jesus, to die on the cross. It is truly exciting to witness the unveiling of God’s unified, redemptive plan. Although individual events may challenge our understanding and even cause us to question God’s motives, the comprehensive narrative of the Bible enables us to know God and commune with Him.

Some influential Christian leaders have recently advocated for a sole focus on Jesus and an emphasis solely on the New Testament. However, we believe that this approach limits our understanding of God and His divine plan. Every passage of the Holy Scriptures is essential. As Paul wrote in his letter to Timothy, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Tim. 3:16-17)
