Who Will Gilmer Buckeyes Play Next

PROSPER — The Gilmer Buckeyes will play for their fourth state football championship next week after scoring a 79-42 win over the Glen Rose Tigers on Friday in a Class 4A Division II semifinal at Children’s Health Stadium.

The Buckeyes (12-3), winners of nine straight game, will play in their ninth state title game against Bellville at 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Bellville edged Wimberley, 35-33, in the other state semifinal on Friday. The Brahmas are 15-0.

Glen Rose ends its season at 10-5 as the Buckeye snapped the Tigers’ nine-game winning streak.

Gilmer didn’t appear to suffer a letdown from its big win over Carthage last week (47-44 in overtime) in Tyler.

Will Henderson led the Buckeyes with 271 yards rushing and four touchdowns on 18 attempts. The defending Class 4A 100-meter dash champion scored on runs of 75, 4, 57 and 51 yards.

Dhrvay Smith also came up big on the ground for the Buckeyes, scoring on runs of 1 and 26 yards, while rushing for 89 yards on 14 carries.

QB Cadon Tennison was steady, tossing two TD passes (22 yards to Brendan Webb and 13 yards to Ta’Erik Tate). He connected on 8 of 13 pass attempts for 120 yards. Webb had five catches for 88 yards.

The Buckeyes rushed out to a 42-7 lead and eventually took a 45-21 halftime advantage as placekicker Brayden Pate booted a 21-yard field goal as the clock hit 0:00. He was 8 of 9 on point-after-kicks. Bell also scored on a two-point conversion.

Defensively, Gilmer picked off three passes — two by Mykah Easley and another by Devin McDonald. Kolby Webb recovered a fumble for Gilmer.

Camden Raymond scored four TDs for the Tigers. He scored on runs of 12 and one yards, while catching TD passes of three and six yards from quarterback Canyon Evans.

Evans threw four TD passes, two to Raymond and one each to Josiah Groeneweg (12) and Adrian Sanchez (7). He was 26 of 46 for 341 yards with three interceptions.

Jorge Mendoza kicked six PATs.

Groeneweg had 10 catches for 196 yards and Raymond had seven receptions for 39 yards.

The 79 points by Gilmer was the second most in the Buckeyes’ playoff history. They defeated Waco Connally 80-21 in 2014.
