Like many quaint and small rural Texas towns, Cameron – named for Texas Revolutionary figure Capt. Ewen Cameron – was settled by a diverse group of pioneers and had its future secured by the arrival of the railroad. The impact of Cameron’s earliest settlers can still be seen all over town. Although “Dutch Towne” no longer bustles with German and Czech shops and shoppers, you can still hear those languages spoken by a few modern-day residents. Cameron has a large number of historic sites and buildings, such as the Milam County Courthouse, the Milam County Historical Museum, Old Town Cameron & Railroad Miniature Museum, and historic jail built in 1895. The City Hall & Ideal Poultry occupy historic buildings with storefront designed by Mesker in the 1800’s, which can be viewed as you stroll the streets of downtown. Murals painted on several downtown buildings tell the story of Cameron’s 19th-century roots.
Milam County’s natural beauty hasn’t changed much, and some of Cameron’s loveliest vistas and best activities are found inside one of six city parks. Explore scenic hiking and biking trails, go for a swim in the City Pool Park, or enjoy a picnic and bird watching on the 25 acres of Wilson-Ledbetter Park! Cameron is also one of the gateways to the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail, a famous 17th-century Spanish route now designated as a National Historic Trail. Recently, 7 new sites along the trail in Milam County were designated and submitted to the National Registry of Historic Places!

Some of the most fun you can have here takes place under the open sky at Yoe Field, as you cheer your heart out for the Yoe High School football team! Or, visit the newly built baseball complex, The Yards of Cameron, home of the Yoe High School Baseball Team and the 44 Farms Farmers Market Pavilion! Can’t make a game, simply stop by to enjoy the walking trail, or catch a Farmer’s Market. Many excellent vendors, tables brimming with fresh produce, jams and jellies, hand-crafted items, and more!
Though our town is small and our roots run deep, we also thrive as a headquarters for two of the largest and most recognized-by-name businesses in Texas and the USA. EBCO General Contractors, who established themselves in Cameron in 1984, is now one of the top contracting firms in Texas. Reaching into the rich agricultural aspect of Cameron is the headquarters of 44 Farms, an industry leader in producing high-quality Angus cattle and beef since 1909. You have probably seen this name on menus featured in restaurants worldwide!
If you time your trip right, you might be able to catch a play by the Milam Community Theater. The city also hosts a number of fun recurring events throughout the year, March Spring Festival the Trunk or Treat Event along with the famous Warehouse of Horrors at Halloween, October’s Steak, Stein & Wine Fest – a steak and wine festival featuring local artists, artisans, and live music, and the ‘Christmas in Cameron’ events kicked off each year on the first Thursday in December with the Chamber of Commerce Christmas Festival & Parade in December!
