During the NFL’s game week 9, several fans noticed some coaches wearing brown-colored clothes. Although some fans may think it’s simply a fashion choice, it may not be the case. Throughout the season, the NFL coaches are free to wear whatever they wish. However, the reason behind the brown clothes of the coaches this week isn’t simply just a fashion choice but has a deeper reason behind it.
The NFL conducts its annual Salute to Service campaign every year during the ninth week of the league. Starting first in 2011, the campaign aims to honor the US military veterans. It also helps generate millions of dollars for the NFL‘s non-profit military partners. The Salute to Service campaign is characterized by coaches wearing brown and camouflage clothes and other events and activities organized by the league.

Several military veterans and personnel are also invited to the league’s games. Last but not least, the league attempts to raise public awareness about the valuable contribution made by the army. However, there’s also a practical reason behind the coaches’ decision to wear brown or camouflage clothes. According to reports, the coaches wear such clothes to keep their conversation and communication signals discreet.

During a game, the coaches are in constant communication with their teams advising them about strategies and so on. Often, the coaches rely on hand signals and or cryptic messages so that the opponents can be kept in the dark about the strategies. It is suggested that wearing brown or camouflage clothes helps the coaches in concealing information from the eyes of the opposition.
Why has the Patriots coach Bill Belichick never worn the NFL’s Salute to Service gear?
While almost every NFL coach has welcomed the league’s Salute to Service campaign, the New England Patriots head coach and general manager Bill Belichick remains an exception. Belichick, the NFL’s longest-tenured head coach, has refrained from wearing brown or camouflaged clothes. However, the reason behind Belichick’s decision isn’t because he doesn’t support the US military.
On the contrary, Bill Belichick is a big supporter of the US military and comes from an army background. Bill’s father, Steve, who was also a football player, served during World War II. Speaking about his decision, Belichick once said, “Honestly, I don’t think what sweatshirt I wear is that important.” However, he isn’t against the NFL’s campaign and has also often worn labels or pins in honor of military veterans.
