Design Story and Inspiration for the Easiest Knit Fingerless Gloves
I love making mittens, but I had never made a simple fingerless version, so for the Holiday Maker’s Challenge, I decided now was a great time for this free knitting pattern!
I’m really enjoying stretching my knitting skills again and relearned how to do the magic loop!! I’m so excited because, although I can knit on dpn’s, I tend to get laddering. You know, where you can tell you changed needles?
So I searched for another method that would help (because everything I read said that laddering mainly gets better with time and even moving a few stitches from needle to needle didn’t help much), and found the magic loop.
I used this method a couple of years ago to knit the Velvet Mittens, but hadn’t quite gotten the hang of it since then. I finally did!! Woo hoo!!
About the Yarn
If you’ve been with us through the Holiday Challenge, you know that I’m trying as hard as possible to use up stash yarn, so I grabbed my trusy Color Made Easy that I knit the Easiest Ever Knit Hat pattern with and went to work! This yarn was perfect for these knitted fingerless gloves.
I love Color Made Easy. It’s really one of my favorite chunky (weight 5) yarns because it works up well, comes in a wide array of colors, and is easy to care for. Win-win!
The best thing about small projects like this is that you can often use scrap yarn! I had about half a skein left over from another project and I was easily able to whip these up.
UPDATE: This yarn has been discontinued, but other bulky (category #5) yarns that get gauge work just as well!

Easiest Knit Fingerless Gloves
What You’ll Need
Yarn: Lion Brand Color Made Easy, (Bulky Yarn #5), 1 skein Mineral Yellow
Knitting Needles: US Sizes 9 (5.5mm) and 10 (6.0mm) either double pointed or circular. Sample was made using the magic loop method with one circular needle.
Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors

Finished Size: Approximately 8″ hand circumference to fit average woman’s hand
Gauge: 15 sts and 20 rows = 4″ (10cm) in St st with larger needles
Stitch Descriptions and AbbreviationsKnit (k)Purl (p)Knit through back loop (ktbl) – insert right hand needle into the back of the next stitch and work a knit stitchM1R – insert left needle point, from back to front, under the horizontal bar joining the last stitch on the right needle to the first stitch on the left needle. Knit through the front loop.M1L – insert left needle point, from front to back, under the horizontal bar joining the last stitch on the right needle to the first stitch on the left needle. Knit through the back loop.

Fingerless Gloves Knitting Pattern
With smaller needles, cast on 32 sts. Divide evenly on double pointed needles or circulars.
Cuff
Rounds 1-12: *Ktbl 2, p2; repeat from * around.
Change to larger needles and Stockinette stitch.
Thumb Gusset
Round 1: P1, k2, p1, k to end.
Round 2 (inc round): P1, M1R, k to next purl st, M1L, p1, knit to end (34 sts).
Rounds 3-5: P1, k to next purl st, p1, knit to end.
Rounds 6-9: Repeat rounds 2-5 (36 sts).
Rounds 10-13: Repeat rounds 2-5 (38 sts).
Body

Round 1: M1R, slip next 10 sts (thumb sts) to waste yarn or stitch holder, cast on 2 sts, M1L, knit to end (32 sts).
Work even in St st until glove measures 3.25″ from the top of the cuff.
Change to smaller needles.
Border Ribbing
Rounds 1-4: *Ktbl 2, p2; repeat from * around.
Bind off in pattern.
Thumb
Slip the 10 sts on hold to the smaller needles. Knit.
Pick up 2 sts from the base of the thumb hole on the hand. Mark as the beginning of round. Join and distribute evenly on needles. (12 sts)
Work in Ktbl 2, p2 rib for 3 rounds, then bind off in pattern.
Finishing
Weave in ends. Use ends from thumb to sew any small holes closed that may occur.
Repeat instructions for second glove.
