Why Did Chubba Purdy Change His Name

Chubba Purdy, younger brother of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, plays quarterback for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, but Chubba wasn’t always officially his “real” name.

Two months ago, he suffered a high-ankle sprain, requiring surgery, according to his bio on the ESPN college football website.

He’s 6ft 2in (1.88m) and weighs 210lb (95kg), but as readers may be able to infer from his nickname, Chubba didn’t use to cut the figure he does today.

Since the age of one, the sophomore, who hails from Queen Creek, Arizona, has had his “Chubba” Purdy nickname – but what was his birth name, and when did his nickname become his real name?

What is Chubba Purdy’s real name, and how did his nickname supersede his birth name?

Chubba Purdy’s real name is Chubba Purdy. However, the name he was born with is Preston – Chubba was a nickname. He got his nickname because, as it suggests, when he was young – an infant, in fact – he was quite chubby.

His father, Shawn Purdy, goes so far as to say he was “huge,” according to AZ Central. By the age of one, Chubba Purdy reportedly weighed 32lb (14.5kg).

Average baby weights are only useful as reference points; as Verywell Family notes, a baby’s exact weight is “less important than their growth trend.”

But for the sake of comparison, the average one-year-old boy is around 21lb 3oz (9.6kg), which goes some way to explaining why Carrie and Shawn Purdy took to calling Chubba “Chubba.”

How old is he, and how did Chubba Purdy’s nickname become his real name?

Born July 30, 2001, Chubba Purdy’s age at time of publication is 21. He will turn 22 this summer coming. He turned 18 in 2019, when AZ Central wrote about how he wants to be “better than his brother Brock at everything.”

According to his profile on the Huskers Football website, he is currently a sophomore at the University of Nebraska, and plays for the Cornhuskers. After he turned 18 in 2019, Purdy said he wanted to legally change his first name to Chubba, which would make his nickname more real than his “real” name, Preston.

As the Tallahassee Democrat reported in 2021, Purdy “officially” took the name Chubba once he was of age. AZ Central, meanwhile, quotes him as having said the reason he changed his name was because “everyone calls me Chubba.”

What’s the age difference between Chubba and Brock Purdy?

Born December 27, 1999, Brock Purdy is currently 23 years of age, meaning the difference between him and his younger brother Chubba is about one and a half years.

Brock played college football at Iowa State University. The 49ers selected him with the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He thereby earned the nickname Mr Irrelevant, of 2022.

He’s the middle child of his and Chubba’s parents, Shawn and Carrie. The eldest is Whitney Purdy, who played softball at Southeastern University.

Carrie regularly posts pictures of her and Shawn’s three children on Instagram, often together as a whole family unit.

Where did Chubba play before going to college?

Chubba was a four-star prospect for Perry High School, in Arizona.

His Huskers bio notes that he accounted for 9,000 yards of offence and 111 touchdowns during two seasons as a starter.

He spent two seasons at Florida State in 2020-21. As a freshman in 2020, he played in three games, during which he completed 27 passes and two touchdowns; rushed 19 times for 57 yards; and became the fifth ever true freshman quarterback to start a game in Florida State history.

Purdy then transferred to Nebraska, where he played six games in his first season.
