AirTags are one of Apple’s quieter successes. A simple tracking device you can attach to any of your items to allow you to locate them should you lose them. Perfect for keys, wallets, backpacks – you name it. If you can put an AirTag in it or stick an AirTag to it, you can track it!
But sometimes you might find your AirTags are making strange beeping noises, which can be concerning, distracting, or even embarrassing if you’re in public.

Let’s take a look at why your AirTags are beeping randomly, and see what you can do to stop it.
Why Your AirTag is Beeping
So, what are the situations that would cause an AirTag to beep, seemingly at random?
AirTag Disconnected
When your AirTag disconnects from its registered device, after a while (approximately 8-12 hrs), it will start emitting a beep. When you’ve genuinely lost an item, this is all well and good. You can also put the AirTag in Lost Mode, which allows you to add contact information to the AirTag’s chip, use precision tracking, and play a beeping tone to help you find it.
But if your device disconnects in error and doesn’t reconnect, the same thing will happen. So if you have an issue with your phone while at home, your AirTag will disconnect and start beeping some time later.
AirTag Detecting Movement
When your AirTag has been disconnected from your device, it will also emit a beep when it detects movement before it reconnects.
A lot of people use AirTags to make finding their car in a busy lot easier, but complain that when they get in the car, the AirTag will beep randomly. This is happening because the movement of you getting in the car is alerting the AirTag before it’s had a chance to connect to your phone.
Low Battery
AirTags themselves do not emit a sound to signal that their battery is running low. You will get a notification on your device, but the AirTag itself doesn’t beep for this specific problem.
However, if your AirTag battery is very close to empty, it may cause the AirTag’s connectivity to drop out, decrease in range, or just generally malfunction, which could lead to errant beeps.
Out-of-Date Firmware
Similar to low battery, old firmware that doesn’t allow the AirTag to communicate correctly with your device and the Find My network could lead to malfunctions.
As AirTags are generally attached to items instead of kept near your iPhone, there might not be a good chance for firmware updates to take place unless you engineer the right environment.

Of course, there is always the chance that the AirTag that you’re hearing is not yours. It could belong to someone else and has made its way onto your person either accidentally, or with malicious intent.
Unfortunately, there are bad people out there who try to use AirTags to track and stalk people. This is highly illegal and if you are caught doing it you will be arrested and prosecuted in most parts of the world.
If you’re hearing a beeping sound from somewhere, and you’ve checked your own AirTags (if you have any), then you may be being tracked. AirTags that have not been with their owner for an extended period of time will emit a beep when they’re moved.
You should receive an alert on your iOS device that an unknown AirTag is moving with your location. To ensure you receive these alerts, make sure the following settings are enabled:
- Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Location Services > turn Location Services
- Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Location Services > System Services and turn on Find My iPhone.
- Ensure Bluetooth is turned on by opening Settings > Bluetooth and enabling Bluetooth
- Open Find My, select Me, and enable Tracking Notifications
Remember, this isn’t always malicious. This can happen for totally innocent reasons – perhaps you’re borrowing someone’s bag or accidentally picked up the wrong laptop case at school. Either way, you’ll receive a notification to tell you that an AirTag that doesn’t belong to you is moving with you, and your location is visible to its owner.
If you receive this notification, follow the steps it outlines to find the AirTag in question. Once located, you can use your iPhone or Android device to disable the AirTag’s tracking capabilities.
How to Stop Your AirTag Beeping
So, if you’ve determined that you’re not being tracked, but your AirTag is still beeping randomly, then it’s time to try out some fixes that can help.
Reconnect AirTag
This is the easiest fix and generally the one that clears a majority of issues, especially if it’s connection related. Even if your AirTag still says it’s connected, go ahead and remove it and then reconnect. Here’s how to do it:
- Open Find My
- Select Items from the bottom of the screen
- Select the AirTag you wish to disconnect
- Hold the AirTag close to your device
- Tap Remove Item and follow the on-screen instructions
To reconnect, all you need to do is ensure your Bluetooth is on and hold your AirTag close to your device. A pop-up will appear to guide you through the connection process.
Reset AirTag
If simply reconnecting didn’t help, resetting the AirTag itself should clear out any little bugs or runtime errors that have built up over time. It will force you to re-pair the AirTag with your device, too, which can reestablish a stronger connection.
Follow these simple steps to reset your AirTag:
- Press the cover of your AirTag and rotate it anti-clockwise
- Remove the cover and battery
- Replace the battery
- Press and hold down the battery until you hear a beep. This beep is to indicate that the battery is connected.
- When the beep has stopped, repeat the process outlined in steps 2 to 4 another 4 times so you will hear a total of 5 beeps.
- The 5th beep will have a different tone, indicating that your AirTag is now in pairing mode
- Replace the cover and rotate it to secure the battery
Your AirTag is now reset! Re-pair it with your device to create a fresh, stable connection. If there were any runtime glitches that may have been causing an errant beep, they have now been wiped from the internal memory.
Update AirTag Firmware
Just like with AirPods, Apple’s firmware updates are downloaded and installed automatically, and AirTags are no different. There is no way to manually update your AirTag’s firmware; you can just give it the best possible chance for it to happen automatically.

Before you get started, you can check which version of firmware your AirTag is currently running by following these quick steps:
- Open the Find My app
- Select Items
- Select your AirTag
- Tap the name and the firmware version will show along with the serial number
If you find you’re still running an old version (check here), you can encourage an update quite easily.
For an AirTag to update successfully, it needs to be within Bluetooth range of your device (around 30 feet) and your device needs to be connected to the internet.
It’s unclear how long the update will take, as it’s dependent on a few factors such as your download speed. To give yourself the best shot, it’s recommended to bring the AirTag in question inside and leave it next to your phone while it’s charging and connected to WiFi overnight.
Change AirTag Battery
As I mentioned earlier, it might be by proxy that a low battery is causing your AirTag to beep, and it’s unlikely at best. But if nothing else is working it’s definitely worth trying!
It’s super simple – just remove the cover by pressing it and rotating it anti-clockwise, then replace the battery with a new one.
AirTags use CR2032 batteries.
Remove AirTag Speakers
And finally, if nothing has worked, or if you’ve discovered that the particular situation you’re using your AirTag in will always lead to beeps, you might be interested in this last resort.
Removing the speakers from your AirTag will definitely stop its beeping, so it’s a guaranteed fix. But it really depends on what you’re using the AirTag for. Many people who take this route are using their AirTag as a means of keeping tabs on their cat or dog, and don’t want any errant beeps to disturb the animals.
If you do choose to go this route, just remember that tampering with the internal electronics will automatically void your warranty, and you could potentially damage the AirTag beyond use if you’re not careful.
It also rules out the possibility of using the AirTag in a more traditional fashion on another item, like your car keys.
