A lucky Powerball ticketholder in Michigan won the estimated $842 million jackpot — the 10th-largest prize in lottery history — during a historic drawing Monday night.
The winning numbers were 12, 21, 42, 44 and 49 with a red Powerball of 1.

It is the first time someone hit the jackpot on New Year’s Day since the game’s inception in 1992, according to the lottery’s website.
The player, whose identity has not been revealed, purchased the winning ticket at a Food Castle grocery store in Grand Blanc, Mich.
The store is 60 miles north of Detroit.
The newest member of the millionaires club can choose between the $842.4 million grand prize, paid out in 30 intervals over 29 years, or a one-time, lump-sum payment worth $425.2 million.

“What an incredible beginning to the New Year for Powerball!” said Drew Svitko, Powerball product group chair and Pennsylvania Lottery executive director, in a statement.
The approximate $842.4 million pot is also the fifth-largest in Powerball’s history.
Two people in Texas and Florida won $2 million each, matching all five white numbers and using the lottery’s Power Play feature.
Another four individual tickets sold in California, Connecticut, Florida and Maryland matched all five white numbers for a $1 million prize.
The lottery’s next drawing on Jan. 3 reverts to the minimum grand prize of $20 million.
The odds of winning Powerball’s grand prize are an astronomical 1 in 292,201,338.

The jackpot grew after 35 drawings without a winner, the last being an unidentified person’s $1.76 million jackpot in October.
Michigan now boasts seven Powerball winners in the game’s history.
Cristy Davis earned a $70 million payday in February 2020, but received about $36 million after taxes, according to the Detroit News.
Powerball, however, saw its first millionaire of 2024 earlier in the day as the clock struck midnight on the East Coast.
Pamela Bradshaw of North Carolina collapsed when Ryan Seacrest called out her number during “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” shortly after midnight.
Bradshaw was one of five randomly selected finalists up for the million-dollar jackpot.
