As Showtime series George & Tammy comes to its conclusion this month, we take a look at what happened to George Richey and his second wife, Sheila Slaughter.

But George Richey, a songwriter in his own right, went on to marry again, after Tammy Wynette’s untimely death in 1998. So, who was Richey’s last wife, Sheila Slaughter?

Who is Sheila Slaughter Richey?

Sheila Richey (née Slaughter) was the fourth and final wife of songwriter George Richey. The couple were married from 2001 until George Richey’s death on July 31, 2010. Richey passed away at the age of 74 after a long battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Before they married, Sheila was a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. She reportedly was a cheerleader for the Cowboys for two seasons in 1987 and 1988.

Hailing from Madisonville, Texas, Sheila always had dreams of being a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. But she also had other intentions for a career in showbusiness. While she studied acting and performance at the University of North Texas in Denton and at KD Studios in Dallas, Sheila wished to be running the show behind-the-scenes.

In 1994, the Oklahoman reported on how Sheila Slaughter Richey developed the idea for Backstage With Tanya Tucker. She served as executive producer and host of the show, which aired on The Nashville Network. It is unconfirmed how Sheila Slaughter met her future husband, George Richey, although she was immersing herself in Nashville’s music scene thanks to the Tanya Tucker interview.
