Which Bell Peppers Are the Sweetest?

Before we delve into the sweetness of the different types of bell peppers, let’s do a quick refresher on the most common bell peppers available out there.

  • Green

  • Yellow
  • Red

These differences in color are easy to explain. Bell peppers change color as they ripen, with the green ones being the less ripe. The red ones, on the other hand, are those that have reached full maturity.

This matters because since they are unripe, green bell peppers tend to be slightly bitter than their counterparts.

On the other end of the spectrum, red bell peppers are the sweetest. Since they have completed their full maturation process, they contain more sugars (as well as other nutrients) than other types of bell peppers.

As hinted above, in addition to being sweet red bell peppers are also nutritious. For example, half a cup of red bell pepper provides 47% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin A and 159% of the recommended amount of vitamin C.
