Jim had an incredible first half, totaling 28 home runs (T2nd in the N.L. with FLA’s Mike Lowell) and 67 RBI prior to the All-Star break. He batted .303 (93-for-307) in the season’s second half…Was named to the N.L. All-Star team for the second time in his career and drew start in CF, going 1-for-2. He also took part in the home run hitting contest during the All-Star week festivities…Was bothered for much of the season’s second half by a right shoulder injury that he suffered in mid-June at MIL and later reaggravated during the All-Star Home Run contest…Finished the year with 39 homers (T7th in N.L.), the second-highest total of his career. He finished fourth in the N.L. in slugging (.617) and was fifth in OPS (1.002)…His 12 outfield assists ranked second among CF’s and he led N.L. centerfielders with an average of 2.95 putouts per nine innings, earning his sixth career Gold Glove Award…Following the season, Jim underwent a successful surgical procedure on his left shoulder to remedy discomfort that he began experiencing during the course of his off-season workout program. The procedure, performed on 12/4, involved the debridement of the A.C. joint in his left shoulder and distal clavicle resection.

2002

Completed another fine season by batting a career-high .311 with 28 home runs and 83 RBI. Posted a .300 batting average for the fourth time in his career…Won his fifth career Rawlings Gold Glove Award and placed 17th (six points) in balloting for National League MVP…He ranked eighth in the N.L. in OPS (.981; .561 slg + .420 on-base)…Led the club in walks (86), intentional walks (14), strikeouts (134) and on-base percentage (.420). Played second season at Palm Springs, hitting .294 in 60 games, with two home runs and 27 RBIs…was placed on disabled list twice during season (4/10-5/7) with contusion of right knee and 7/23 until seasonbs end with a strained right knee.

Played 91 games at Palm Springs (A) and batted .293 with 56 RBIs…hit .469 (30-for-64) in July and won California League bPlayer of the Weekb honors for 7/15-21, when he hit .571 (12-for-21).
