Who Is Roy Charles Waller Wife

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Roy Charles Waller testified in Sacramento court Thursday that he did not commit serial rapes across Northern California that spanned 1991 to 2006, even as the suspected “NorCal Rapist” said he could not explain why his DNA was found at the crime scenes.

Waller, 60, faces 46 counts—including rape and kidnapping. The charges involve nine women across six counties—Sonoma, Contra Costa, Solano, Butte, Yolo and Sacramento counties.

The former UC Berkeley employee living in Benicia was arrested in September 2018. Investigators credit advancements in DNA genealogy that also led to the arrest and conviction of the “Golden State Killer,” Joseph DeAngelo.

Prosecutors say Waller’s DNA was found at six of the seven crime scenes. The other came from a surveillance photo allegedly showing Waller using the woman’s ATM card.

Waller has pleaded not guilty to the charges and faces life in prison.

“It’s not me,” Waller testified, although he could not explain the DNA connection.

Prosecutors argue the assaults had a similar M.O. The women were tied to the bed with their eyes taped shut. The assaults would take place over the course of hours, and the suspect would caress, kiss and cuddle the bound women. He would also steal valuables, like jewelry or an ATM card, before leaving.

During questioning by the defense on Thursday, Waller went into detail about online dating and chat rooms involving Asian women, particularly of Chinese descent. He would often trail off on tangents, sharing details about his life—collecting motorcycles, playing paintball and taking care of his father until his death. On multiple occasions, the judge would instruct him to directly answer questioning by the defense.

Waller also addressed the large amounts of duct tape, rope, zip ties, lock picking book, ski masks and gloves found by investigators during his arrest. He explained the items were used for paintball, mechanic work, snowboarding, among other hobbies.

“I’m a collector of odd things,” he testified in response to owning a lock picking book.

He did not dispute the survivors and said the reason he did not acknowledge them during their weeks of testimony is so that they would feel comfortable and talk freely. But he said the crimes did not involve him.

However, Waller became irritated and upset when prosecutors attempted to link pornography Waller owned to the crimes. Some of the explicit images involved Asian women bound.

“I’ve downloaded hundreds. Hundreds. Along with many other people,” Waller testified “No reason for these pictures to do anything with what this case is about.”

They also found a duffel bag with women’s underwear as well as duct tape, rope, handcuffs, zip ties, gloves and a ski mask. Waller explained that was from a previous consensual relationship.

“You’re trying to twist this,” Waller testified. “I have nothing to do with these cases. Period.”
