For those who don’t know, Tightbooth is a product of Osaka born professional skater, filmmaker and pizzeria owner Shinpei Ueno. Founded in 2005 it remains an integral part of Japans ever growing skateboarding population. Tightbooth is just one part out of a whole lot in Shinpei’s Tightbooth skating ecosystem.
As to this day the streets of Tokyo and most of Japan are still plastered with signs prohibiting the act of skateboarding, Tightbooth is as authentic as it comes, carefully harmonising the appropriate attire together with the culture associated with it. It wasn’t until the 1990’s in which street skating made its way to Japan, as a decade earlier in the west skaters ditched the skateparks opting for the more versatile, challenging and free flowing terrain of the street.

Inspired by Hip hop, graffiti, a rebellious outlook (mirrored by Shinpei himself) mixed together with a close knit group of like minded individuals, all these factors helped define the Tighbooth look we know today. As baggy, rugged clothing became the fit of choice this allowed for freedom of movement when performing tricks and in the case of thicker jackets and hard wearing pants in the process doubled up as a form of protection from the inevitable scrapes and falls of street skating.
With the late night backdrop of Tokyo and the constant intrusion of police officers and security guards the Tightbooth skate videos are the perfect editorial for Tightbooth to show just how functional the product is as the garments get put to their intended use.
