Do you ever sit in the shower and wonder what type of shark you are? Do you sit at your desk, staring out of the window, pondering whether you and a Whale shark could be friends? Do you contemplate if you’re the Great white or the Mako shark in Shark Week, Discovery Channel and Nat Geo shows? Well, so do we. So we thought we’d do you a favor and tell you what type of shark you are now!
Whale shark – the gentle giant
Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the ocean so their size is their most notable feature. The largest recorded was 60 feet long and weighed about 9 tons! We can’t even fathom how large that is. Well, it’s about the size of a school bus, so actually we can.

Whale sharks may be large, but they’re the most gentle of sharks. They’re not like most savage hunting sharks. Rather they filter feed on tiny plankton. And they don’t hunt or go looking for food in the same way as most of their ‘cousins’. They open wide and sieve everything that passes by!
So if you’re a big friendly giant and a chilled, laid back dude, we reckon you’re most like a Whale shark!
Tiger shark – the fashionable boss
Are you athletic, powerful and an all-around ninja? Are you super smart and a top performer? Your spirit shark is the Tiger shark!
Tigers are powerful and sharp. They’re consummate scavengers with a heightened sense of sight and smell. And they have extra sharp serrated teeth and powerful jaws. So they can snack on whatever they please.
They’re the best at what sharks should be good at – hunting. And they will eat anything that passes them by. They’re the real boss. They munch on stingrays, sea snakes, seals, birds, squids, and even tires and trash.
Not only that, they’re fashionable. Their dark vertical stripes, most visible on juveniles, are what gives them their name. If you sport these fancy patterns in your wardrobe – you’re the gorgeous Tiger shark!
Sand tiger shark – the resting bitch face
Are you a lovely person but suffer from a resting bitch face? Your doppelganger is the Sand tiger shark. These guys are unfortunately cursed with a deceivingly ferocious look. That’s a blessing if you’re a shark though!
They have a mouth full of teeth that stick out in every direction, even when their mouths are shut. Despite their aggressive appearance, they’re very docile. Sand tiger sharks hang around shorelines and troll the ocean floor which is why they’re named so.
These sharks are seriously smart and tactful. They’re the only sharks known to surface and gulp air as part of their hunting tactics. They store the air in their stomachs so they can float motionless to await prey.
In the human world, the epitome of tactfulness is arguably winning Monopoly. So if you’re that guy (to all your friends’ envy!) – you’re spirit shark is the Sand tiger.
Lemon shark – more sweet than sour

Lemon sharks get their name from their bright yellow skin, not their sour nature. They’re super social and are usually hanging out with as many as 50 of their buds! They may sound bitter but their sweet nature defines their personality.
These sharks are also homebodies. Scientific studies have shown they return to their birthplace to give birth. Are you a traveler or do you prefer to stick close to home like a Lemon shark?
Nurse shark – night owls
Are you a chilled out, friendly night owl? You’re most like a nurse shark! These guys are slow-moving bottom-dwellers and are harmless souls. They rest on the floor in giant piles in the day with all their pals, then they come out to play at night!
Their scientific name sounds like something Harry Potter might say to a three-headed dog. Ginglymostoma cirratum! It means “curled, hinged mouth”, describing their puckered face.
Mako shark – track star
Mako sharks are the fastest sharks in the world, reaching speeds of 35kph! They’re the track stars of the sea. Were you always the sprinter at school? Do you work out? You’re a Mako shark!
There’s a reason Makos feature heavily in Shark Week. These sharks are super streamlined, with a bullet-like shape minimizing water resistance. The Short-fin mako shark has short fins that reduce drag making them extra speedy.
If you’re pretty ripped and a damn good swimmer – this is you!
Reef shark – calm and collected
If you’re small, calm, and a little shyer, then we reckon you’re a perfect Reef shark! These beautiful creatures tend to hang out around coral reefs in warm, shallow waters. They’re totally chill and you’ll never hear of them associated with a shark attack.
There are a few species of Reef shark. Whitetip and Blacktips are the ones most often sighted sharks around the Gili Islands! So if you are a die-hard fan of the Gilis, that could be a reason you’re a Reef shark too!
Ornate wobbegong shark – blending in
Do you prefer to stand out or do you prefer to blend in with the crowd? If you prefer to lay low and stick to the ordinary, you’re an Ornate wobbegong shark!
These fascinating creatures have evolved to look like a patch of corals. But don’t worry – it’s not to say you’re a plain Jane! You’re actually a tactful hunter. Their unusual coloration and decoration make them camouflaged while they wait for prey.
You can find lots of these sharks in Indonesia. Wobbegongs can hold large prey in their mouths for days until they die. As a human, we’re not saying you would do that, but it’s quite an interesting fact.
Hammerhead shark – quirky cool
Are you a little bit quirky but cool? You’re a hammerhead. It’s as simple as that. They’re the most identifiable sharks. Their distinctive head shape makes them easy to spot from the crowd!

Their heads are hammer-shaped to provide an increased ampullae of Lorenzini. This is a group of sensory organs that allows sharks to detect the electrical fields created by prey animals.
Their favorite meal, stingrays, burrow under the sand. Their increased sensitivity allows them to find them! Sporting wide-set eyes also allows them to see much more. Cool, quirky and top-of-the-class smart and adapted.
Great white shark – misunderstood
The most famous shark of all! They’re all over Shark Week, The Discovery Channel and Nat Geo. The Great white shark is something to behold.
They’re around 2.5 tonnes of pure muscle (well, also a lot of liver, don’t you know)? But they’re far more fearsome in most people’s imaginations than in reality. They’re the most misunderstood creatures.
Hollywood made them into the world’s scariest animal. They’re associated with the most shark attacks, but you should be more scared of flip flops, hot dogs and your bed! These all cause more harm to people each year than any species of shark put together.
If you’re the misunderstood kid, we reckon you’re a Great white.
Bull shark – hangry
Are you always hungry and will you eat anything? That might be the main defining feature of a Bull shark. Bulls have a voracious appetite and will eat anything they see! These guys are aggressive and will do anything for that snack.
They are adaptable and can live in freshwater, unlike most other species. Sometimes they even leap up river rapids like salmons to reach inland lakes! They’ll do whatever it takes. If ‘Joey doesn’t share food’ and you are the hangriest person you know, you can be a Bull shark!
Dusky shark – willing to go the extra mile
Now, Dusky sharks are less ‘popular’ or well known, but that doesn’t mean they’re not cool. These beautiful creatures are long-distance swimmers. They’re known for epic migrations up to 2000 nautical miles.
Seasonal temperature changes are the cause. Summer means migration to the Poles, and winter brings equatorial migration. Are you willing to travel across the world to get some winter sun?! You could be a Dusky.
