Who Does Tennessee Play In The Bowl Game

Tennessee football got its bowl destination on Sunday. The Vols wills face No. 17 Iowa in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl. The game is slated for Jan. 1 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida.

Tennessee was largely projected to be in the Gator Bowl ahead of Saturday, but Alabama upsetting Georgia in the SEC Championship led to some rework of the bowl games. The Crimson Tide snuck into the playoff, and Georgia, Ole Miss and Missouri all earned New Year’s Six Bowl bids.

Tennessee earns a bowl bid after finishing the year 8-4 and 4-4 in SEC play — good for third in the SEC East. Iowa finished 10-3 while boasting one of the worst offenses in football. The Hawkeyes had over 1,000 more yards punting than on offense.

Tennessee last played in the Citrus bowl following the 2001 season under head coach Phillip Fulmer. The Vols won that game 45-17, defeating Michigan. Tennessee also played in the Citrus Bowl in 1996 and 1997, winning both games.

It will be the Vols’ sixth appearance in the Citrus Bowl, and they have yet to lose.

As for the other SEC teams, Alabama snuck into the College Football Playoff at No. 4, and the Crimson Tide will face Michigan in the Rose Bowl. Florida State came slotted in a No. 5, and Georgia finished at No. 6. Missouri finished No. 9, and Ole Miss came in at No. 11 — both earning New Year’s Six Bowl bids.

Who may opt out

The bowl game will likely have opt outs from both sides. For Tennessee, running back Jaylen Wright is a likely opt out candidate. Wright has rushed for 1,013 yards on 137 carries. He led all SEC running backs with 7.4 yards per carry.

Edge rusher Tyler Baron is also an opt out candidate for the bowl game. He also has a strong NFL resume. John Campbell Jr. and Omarr Norman-Lott also are draft prospects and could opt out due to health. Both missed the regular season finale with injury.

As for quarterback Joe Milton III, he is likely to not opt out of the bowl game. He ended his final press conference following the Vanderbilt game with “we’ve got one more.”
