It’s that time of year again when school is nearly over for the year and summertime fun is in the forefront of every students’ mind. It’s also the time of year when juniors start thinking about their high school senior photos.

Here in Minnesota, peak season for taking senior photos are June through early October. This is obvious, right? The weather is better, colors are brighter, and the days are longer.
But the real question is when should you book your senior photo session?

The answer is right freaking now!
Reach out to your favorite photographer sometime in the early spring and officially book your senior session. Do this especially if the photographer you want to work with also photographs weddings. Why? Because wedding season and senior session season overlap.
Photographers who shoot weddings and senior sessions have fewer opportunities to add portrait sessions without advanced notice. And it gets even harder to add sessions to their schedule the closer it gets to fall.
The phrase, “The early bird catches the worm” comes to mind. The earlier you book your senior session, the greater chance you have of having your session on a preferred date and at a preferred time.

I always encourage seniors and their parents to schedule their senior sessions in the summer. Why? Because they’re out of school. We can take their photos in the morning or late afternoon without worrying about school or homework.
Another reason I prefer to schedule my senior sessions during the summer is because of weather. Should there be bad weather and we have to reschedule their session, we can do so easily because there are more summer days to choose from. This isn’t so the closer we get to fall. And if we do have to postpone into the fall, we then have school and extra curricular activities to contend with.
What’s the main take away?
I highly recommend and strongly encourage you to book your senior session by the beginning of Juneand to take your senior photos by the end of August. If you absolutely can’t take your photos by the end of August for sure take them by the end of September. NOTE: many high school yearbook photo deadlines are in the beginning or middle of October.
