When Does Deer Season Start In Texas

Colder temperatures outside is a good indication that white-tailed deer season in Texas is approaching.

The general season officially begins on Saturday, Nov. 4 and ends on Jan. 7, 2024 for the North Zone and Jan. 21, 2024 for the South Zone.

As hunters gear up to hunt for the next two months, here are some things to know for the 2023-2024 season.

Texas bag limits

According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife department, the bag limit size remains the same as last season. The South Zone bag limit for Coastal Bend counties require a five deer limit with no more than three bucks.

All hunters using MLDP tags are required to possess a resident or non-resident general hunting license.

Where are white-tailed deer found in Texas?

White-tailed deer can be found in all but two of the state’s 254 counties. Any ranch or open ranch in South Texas is a good place to hunt for white-tailed deer.

For Coastal Bend-area hunters, a key rule to remember when hunting is that it’s unlawful to possess, shoot or hunt with a firearm or any archery equipment on all land and water in the Aransas River and Poesta Creek in Bee County, public water in the state-owned riverbeds of La Salle and McMullen counties and on all land and public water in the state-owned riverbeds of the Nueces, Frio and Atascosa rivers in Live Oak County.

Special Antler Restrictions (Managed Lands Deer Program)

The bag limit is two legal bucks, but only one can have two branched antlers with an inside spread of 13 inches or more.

In Nueces county, the bag limit is five deer, no more than three bucks. If Managed Lands Deer Program buck tags have been issued for a property, harvest is by MLDP tag only and all bucks must be tagged with a MLDP tag.

If MLDP antlerless tags have been issued for a property, harvest is by MLDP tag only and all antlerless deer must be tagged with a MLDP antlerless tag. The landowner is responsible for providing MLDP tags to the hunters on MLDP properties.

All hunters using MLDP tags are required to possess a resident or non-resident general hunting license.

Enjoy the season

The South Texas Plains are known for mature bucks and above average antler quality relative to many other areas of the state. Since 2021, the TPWD said hunter success was estimated to be 79% with an estimated harvest of 7.9 deer per 1,000 acres, according to the TPWD. Hunters might see a repeat of that this year.

TPWD biologists also expect deer hunters to have opportunities to fill freezers this season thanks to the weather conditions.

Even with dry weather and heavy rain throughout the state, hunters should still be able to see deer frequenting feeders.

“Overall, the 2023-2024 deer hunting season is expected to be good in terms of harvest numbers and opportunities,” TPWD White-tailed Deer Program Leader Blaise Korzekwa said. “Don’t let the chance to spend time afield with family, friends and fellow hunters pass you by.”
