Where Should A Man Carry His Cell Phone

EDITOR’S NOTE: Men of various ages answer questions in this extra edition of the regular 20- 40-60 Etiquette column.

QUESTION: Where does everyone carry their cellphone? I am having trouble carrying it in my pockets and so I seem to have it in my hand all the time. Women carry theirs in their purses. What about the men?

Adam Kemp, 20s, general assignment reporter for The Oklahoman: Unfortunately, I don’t have a great solution to carrying my cellphone around. I’ve always carried mine in my front pocket and it has always been a spot of annoyance for me too.

I’m not a fan of the side holster for your phone, carrying it around on your hip just looks a bit tacky to me.

I have friends that will carry their phones in their back pocket but I’m scared that I would forget it was back there and sit down on it and crack the screen.

My only relief from front pocket wear comes as the weather cools down. I love keeping my phone in a jacket or coat pocket, preferably in an inside jacket pocket for safety’s sake.

There seems to be a large untapped market for a male-carrying device, something cooler than a man purse but smaller than a backpack or briefcase.

Let’s get inventing.

Ford Sanger, 30s, local businessman: I would rethink how you are dressing or think about getting a smaller phone.

Most people I know either carry their phones or put them in their pockets.

Brad McNeill, 40s, owner, A&B Paving: Dude, if you can’t fit a phone in your pocket, then you need a smaller phone or looser-fitting pants. Unless you’re ready to go “man-purse” then you better find a pocket because that’s all we guys have.

Scott Kinnaird, 50s, executive chairman, A La Mode Inc.: If you don’t already wear pants loose enough to carry a cellphone in your front pocket, you need to start, because that’s where men should carry their cellphone.

Clay Healey: 50s, owner, AIC Title Service LLC: Well, I suppose that everybody’s different, but I carry my smartphone in my pocket with no problem at all. It’s way too unsafe in my hands!

Get a new pair of pants or a smaller cellphone if it is truly a problem for you.

If you don’t like the extra bulge in your pants, the inside pocket of a jacket or blazer is another solution to the same problem.

Ron James, 60s, independent oil producer: I never get any good news on the phone. Hence, my cell is turned off and resides in my desk.

Every once in a while I’ll turn it on to see if it still works. The National Security Agency must think I never leave the house.
