Central Iowans have plenty of homespun traditions, like Maid-Rites and calling soda “pop,” and Halloween in the Des Moines metro area is no different. Trick-or-treating dates and times are traditionally held on Beggars’ Night, in the evening hours before Halloween on Oct. 30.
The tradition started about 80 years ago to curb the violence and vandalism that had become an annual problem on Halloween night in Des Moines. And usually children must tell a joke in order to snag a treat.
