Why Are Bangs Called Bangs

The History of Bangs (Fringe): In the 1600s bangs, which are now known as fringe, were a controversial statement because women who cut or curled their bangs were believed to be on their way to committing a mortal sin. Following antiquity, historians date the first traceable roots of bangs to Medieval Spain. More than 1,000 years ago, an influential musician by the name of Ziryab popularized bangs. Ancient Egyptians were onto this trend even earlier than that, using blunt styles cut across the forehead for natural hair and for wigs.

The Different Styles of Bangs: There are many different styles of bangs and fringes, but the most popular today are:

Curtain Bangs: This style creates the illusion of density and makes your hair seem a lot fuller towards the front. Usually parted down the middle or sometimes swept to each side. They perfectly frame your face and eyes, much like a curtain does with a window.

Wispy Bangs: This fringe introduces you to the world of bangs, it helps you ease into your new hairstyle. It is a more soft type of bang that is lightly feathered towards the end. Wispy bangs will flatter women with longer face shapes who want to shorten their facial features.

Arched Bangs: This style of bang will always provide a good volume boost when styled appropriately. Arched bangs are similar to blunt bangs, except rather than the cut being straight across the forehead, it is arch-shaped and follows the curve of the face.

Baby Bangs: This adds some pizazz to your overall appearance while pulling attention away from the fineness of your hair. Micro bangs are essentially just wispy or blunt bangs that start a couple inches above your eyebrows. The cut is a little retro and very polarizing, you either love or loathe a baby bang. Textured Bangs: This type of fringe will work miracles on your hair by obviously adding texture and volume. Textured bangs are bangs that have some sort of layering in them, as opposed to a blunt bang.

Blunt Bangs: This style is pretty easy to pull off, as long as your hair is both thick and straight. The hair is cut straight across the forehead in a blunt manner.

Side Bangs: This fringe is sure to complement the thickness of your locks, whether your hair is short or long. This offers face framing and delicately highlights your eyes and cheekbones.

Choppy Bangs: This will truly accentuate your hair’s natural density, allowing you to try out other messy hairstyles. Choppy bangs are a textured fringe where the length of the bangs is varied. Unlike blunt or straight bangs, choppy bangs are cut at different lengths from one side to the other and are often angled.

Spiky Bangs: These bangs will highly likely style themselves for you, provided they’re properly layered. This gives you a cute and funky look.

Pixie Bangs: A short haircut between one half to three inches long that is styled with either a front or side part. This style is for more fashion forward ladies who have the confidence to rock an extra-edgy cropped cut!
