What Happened On I-465 In Indiana Today

An SUV being chased by Indianapolis police crashed into a car with a driver and four children inside.

The crash closed I-465 at I-65 on the southeast side of the city, backing up traffic for miles Tuesday as officers investigated and searched for a suspect in the SUV who remained at large as of 4 p.m.

One child in the other vehicle was treated for minor injuries and no one required hospital treatment, police said.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers searched areas around the Indiana Central Little League Park and Lick Creek but said the suspect likely escaped the perimeter.

Traffic along I-465 near South Keystone Avenue and I-65 is as a halt after a police pursuit ended in a crash shortly before 2:30 p.m. Oct. 17, 2023.

The SUV was being pursued by the Indiana Crime Guns Task Force after officers watched as four people armed with firearms got into the vehicle. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, said Sgt. Anthony Patterson.

“The pursuit went on for several miles,” Patterson said. “The vehicle approached 465 and got on the interstate. An IMPD sergeant terminated the pursuit in the interest of public safety and the construction that’s going on.”

Once on the interstate, police said, the SUV continued driving recklessly until crashing into another vehicle occupied by four children and an adult, who were treated and later released.

Detectives on scene were able to arrest three suspects but a fourth escaped. Officers will continue to search the area, police said. Inside the SUV, police found two firearms. One handgun was outfitted with a machine gun conversion device, Patterson said, which allows semi-automatic guns to fire without repeatedly pulling the trigger.

An Indiana State Police helicopter, IMPD K-9 unit and police drone aided in the arrest of the three suspects and in the hunt for the fourth, Patterson said.

Police were unable to provide a description of the fourth suspect but said there was no immediate danger to the public, saying officers were fairly confident the suspect had left the area. Police will nonetheless maintain a presence in the area, Patterson said, as they continue their investigation.
